House of the Dragon follows the story of House Targaryen and one of the most tragic events in their history, the Dance of the Dragons. At the beginning of the show, House Targaryen is seen at the very peak of its power with several mighty dragons at their disposal.

As fans know, the Targaryens eventually lose their dragons, however, quite a few of them make their appearance in House of the Dragon. With the house at the peak of its powers, these fire-breathing monsters are seen flying all over Westeros.

8 Syrax

Syrax is a she-dragon mounted by none other than Rhaenyra Targaryen, one of the most important characters in the series. Syrax has only ever had one rider in Rhaenyra and she is described to be extremely protective of her rider.

In terms of power, Syrax is incredibly impressive, however, lacks high-level battle experience. She is also known to be massive and, as Rhaenyra mentioned in the very first episode, is almost as big as Caraxes.

7 Caraxes

Also known as the Blood Wyrm, Caraxes is an incredibly powerful dragon that is mounted by Daemon Targaryen, the Rogue Prince. Before Daemon, this Dragon was ridden by Aemon I Targaryen. Caraxes is known to be extremely massive and has a rather elongated neck.

In terms of combat, he is known to be battle-hardened and extremely ferocious, just like his rider, Daemon. Caraxes will play an incredibly important role in House of the Dragon's first season and fight many battles alongside Daemon.

6 Vhagar

Vhagar is the oldest dragon in House of the Dragon. Born on Dragonstone during the Century of Blood, Vhagar was then ridden by Visenya Targaryen during the conquest.

Currently, she is the largest dragon, known to have grown almost as big as Belerion himself. Vhagar is tremendous in combat and possesses the highest level of power out of all dragons alive.

5 Meleys

Meleys

Meleys, also known as the Red Queen, is a scarlet dragon known to be incredibly swift. She was first claimed by Alyssa Targaryen and after her death, went on to be ridden by none other than the Queen Who Never Was, Rhaenys Targaryen.

Meleys is known to be extremely fast and is extraordinarily skilled in combat as well, as seen in the Battle of Rook's Rest, where she played quite an important role.

4 Seasmoke

A pale silver-grey dragon, Seasmoke is known to be quite a powerful beast. He is still considered to be very young compared to the other dragons however, he is also more nimble. Seasmoke was first ridden by Leanor Velaryon, as seen during the war against the Crab Feeder.

Seasmoke certainly lacks experience in battle, however, with time, he grows only more ferocious. In 120 AC, Seasmoke becomes riderless as Leanor Velaryon is no longer around. It takes quite a long time for him to take another rider.

3 Sunfyre

Sunfyre is known to have been quite a special dragon. Among all the dragons that the Targaryens have had over the years, Sunfyre is known to have been the most beautiful of them all. His golden scales shine brighter than the sun and, as such, this beast is considered to be a fitting ride for Aegon II Targaryen.

He is known to be a very young dragon, despite which he is quite skilled in combat. In the Battle of Rook's Rest, Sunfyre played quite an important role alongside Vhagar, when he engaged Meleys and her rider, Rhaenys, in combat. Sunfyre endured heavy injuries but still lived.

2 Dreamfyre

Another one of the young dragons, Dreamfyre is a pale blue beast with silver wings who was first ridden by Rhaena Targaryen and later by Helaena Targaryen. Hatched during the reign of Aegon Targaryen, Dreamfyre bonded with Rhaena quite easily.

After her death, she remained in the Dragonpit for quite a long time until Helaena eventually bonded with her during the reign of Viserys Targaryen. Dreamfyre is an extremely powerful dragon and compared to the other young dragons, she is certainly more adept at fighting. Fans will surely see a lot of her moving forward and House of the Dragon.

1 Vermithor

Vermithor

Feared as the Bronze Fury, Vermithor was the dragon of King Jaehaerys Targaryen. As is evident from his name, he was a bronze-colored dragon with huge tan wings. He's known to have been an extremely massive dragon, with the only ones larger than him being Balerion the Black Dread and Vhagar.

Being considered a mighty dragon in 48 AC and onwards, Vermithor was certainly one of the very strongest and Westeros. In the Dance of the Dragons, he plays an incredibly important role. His mighty skills in combat, along with his intimidating aura certainly make him one of the most feared dragons to ever live.

House of the Dragon is currently airing on HBO Max, and season 1 is set to conclude on October 23, 2022. The show has been renewed for a second season.
