With House Of The Dragon having begun airing, fans know already that quite a number of dragons will make their way to the first season of the show. In comparison to Game of Thrones, which was set in an era where dragons had died, House of the Dragon still sees these majestic beasts flourish.

As such, the show will showcase the true power of House Targaryen. One such dragon that will be heavily focused on in the show is Caraxes. Caraxes debuted in the very first episode of the show, and there are quite a few things about him that every fan should know.

Caraxes was claimed for the first time in 72 AC but none other than Prince Aemon Targaryen. At that time, Caraxes was a very young dragon, however, according to the dragon keepers, he was the most fierce and intimidating of all the young dragons.

Caraxes spent quite a few years with Aemon and was used by him in the war against the Dornish in 83 AC. Just like most other dragons in the series, Caraxes had more than just one rider as Prince Aemon eventually died with an injury from a crossbow bolt.

Before Aemon claimed Caraxes as his dragon, he had already made quite a reputation for himself among the dragon keepers. He was known to be quite a fierce dragon.

In fact, out of all the young dragons present in the Dragonpit at the time, Caraxes was known to be the most intimidating and dangerous one. His nature earned him the nickname of the Blood Wyrm, which perfectly fits his fiery personality.

As mentioned earlier, Aemon Targaryen ended up dying with a crossbow bolt to his throat. At the time, Caraxes is known to have been eating goats. For quite a while, he had no rider but, eventually, the Rogue Prince, Daemon Targaryen claimed Caraxes in 105 AC.

The two formed quite a special relationship with each other and this was seen quite clearly in the first episode of House of the Dragon after Damon was asked to leave King's Landing. Along with his paramour, Mysaria, Daemon then retreated to Dragonstone.

5 His Unusual Body

One of the things that sets Caraxes apart from other dragons in House of the Dragon is his unusual body. As fans would have noticed in the first episode of the series, Caraxes has an unusually long neck. According to the showrunners, this would have made it impossible for him to fly without having trouble in the air.RELATED: House Of The Dragon: Things From The Books The Show Should Expand On

To counter this, smaller wings were added to his feet which help him maintain perfect balance in the air. His rather strange appearance only makes him even more likable to the fans.

4 His Color

Every dragon in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire has a color associated with their personality. In the case of Caraxes, this color is red. This ties in well to his nickname of Blood Wyrm which was given to him by the Dragonkeepers.

Caraxes was known to be a fierce dragon ever since he was young and, while growing up, this ferocity of his got even greater. As such, the color red suits Caraxes perfectly. This also goes in line with the personality of his rider, Daemon Targaryen, who is known to be the Rogue Prince.

3 His Size

In terms of size, Caraxes is known to be quite huge. While not the biggest dragon in the series, he is significantly bigger than an average dragon. Syrax, Rhaenyra's dragon, didn't match up to Caraxes in size.

Vhagar, however, is known to have been twice the size of Caraxes. Being the only living dragon from the time of Aegon the Conqueror, it is expected for the latter to have been much larger. Nonetheless, Caraxes' size is still impressive.

2 His Fighting Prowess

In battle, Caraxes is known to have been one of the most formidable dragons. His experience was just as great as the Rogue Prince himself and his ferocity only made his enemies share him more.

Caraxes, despite being half the size of Vhagar, was able to lock horns with him on an equal footing. In fact, Caraxes proved to be strong enough to rip his throat out with his powerful jaw. That's not to say that this was an easy fight for him as he did end up taking lethal injuries in this fight as well.

1 His Death

Caraxes Roar

Despite being strong as he was, Caraxes eventually died. In the fight against Vhagar atop the God's Eye, he saw his belly get ripped open and his left arm get completely torn. However, he ripped Vhagar's throat out with his jaw at the same time. Both dragons ended up falling into the God's Eye and while Vhagar didn't survive the fall, Caraxes did. The dragon managed to pull itself ashore despite having lost a limb and receiving grievous injuries. Caraxes ended up dying slowly outside the walls of Harrenhall.
