Yesterday, a teaser of the cover for the July issue of Official PlayStation Magazine (OPM) leaked out and caused a stir among Horizon Zero Dawn fans. The cover read: "Revealed! The surprising Horizon Zero Dawn sequel," which, of course, caused onlookers to believe that the magazine would officially announce Horizon Zero Dawn's video game continuation in three months.

However, this is not entirely the case. OPM UK took to Twitter today to clarify what exactly the teasing text was referring to. And while it is a Horizon Zero Dawn follow-up, it is not "Horizon Zero Dawn 2" — or the video game sequel that fans are still waiting to hear an official announcement for.

Instead, the text was referring to an upcoming Horizon Zero Dawn comic that Guerrilla Games announced late last month. The comic will be a joint venture between Guerrilla and Titan Comics and act as a canon continuation to Horizon Zero Dawn. It currently has a release date set for July 22, 2020, which means that it'll release during the same month as the OPM issue that plans on covering it. And this issue, for those interested, will go on sale next week.

This may all come as somewhat of a disappointment to some fans, but it makes sense. Horizon Zero Dawn is one of PlayStation's biggest modern-day hits. Sony would put more effort into the reveal of a complete sequel than just a few words on a magazine — at least it should if the rumors about the title are true.

According to these rumors, Guerrilla put Horizon Zero Dawn's sequel in development soon after the original's launch. And it plans to make Horizon Zero Dawn a trilogy, one that will release over multiple years. Thus, when the developer makes its Horizon Zero Dawn sequel announcement, it'll probably do so during a big, game-reveal event. This way, it can show off gameplay and better detail the plans it has for the series future.

As for the Horizon Zero Dawn comic, it will more than likely act as a prologue to whatever Horizon sequel Guerrilla Games has in store. While Titan Comics will publish the story, it's being penned by one of the writers that worked on the scenario of the original game, which seems like the perfect opportunity for Guerrilla to turn the comic into a potential lead-in for a sequel game.

Horizon Zero Dawn released for the PlayStation 4 on February 28, 2017.
