A recent job listing hints that Guerilla’s upcoming multiplayer Horizon spin-off will have its own storyline and characters completely independent of Aloy’s ongoing saga. The original Horizon Zero Dawn launched for the PlayStation 4 back in 2017 and took gamers to a post-apocalyptic version of the United States inhabited by small human tribes and overrun with animalistic Machines. Last year’s Horizon Forbidden West and its Burning Shores DLC showed off more of this world as main protagonist Aloy continued her mission to uncover the hidden secrets of the civilization that came before and save her world from an impending threat.

While both mainline Horizon games were overshadowed by other releases at the time of their launch, they have been met with much praise for their inspired setting, and spawned several tie-in projects. In addition to February's VR spin-off Horizon Call of the Mountain and the upcoming live-action television series, developer Guerrilla Games confirmed that an online multiplayer title set in the Horizon universe is currently in the works back in December. Not much is officially known about this upcoming title, save that it is reportedly being worked on by Guerilla’s Amsterdam team and features a new cast of characters and "a unique stylized look."

More potential clues about this forthcoming Horizon multiplayer game have surfaced in a new job listing posted by Guerrilla Games, which calls for a Narrative Director to help “guide the vision for storytelling as the world of Horizon evolves into the multiplayer space.” According to the job offer, this Narrative Director will lead a diverse team of writers as they create a multitude of new characters and stories, lending further proof to the notion that the Horizon multiplayer title will have its own separate plot.

As noted above, most of the details surrounding Guerrilla’s Horizon multiplayer project are still shrouded in mystery as of this writing. Early alpha footage of the game was reportedly leaked back in January, featuring stylized characters and a more cartoon-like aesthetic than the mainline Horizon titles. Additionally, many believe that this online multiplayer spin-off will launch sometime before the third Horizon game, which itself hasn’t been announced yet but is highly expected given Forbidden West’s cliffhanger ending.

In the meantime, fans can look forward to the currently untitled Horizon online multiplayer game, which will reportedly feature its own storyline and a host of new characters for players to meet and presumably take control of. The world of Horizon is filled with ruined versions of familiar real-world locations and diverse tribal cultures, and it will be interesting to see how the upcoming multiplayer spin-off fleshes it out with new characters and plotlines.
