Over 600,000 trees were planted thanks to Horizon Forbidden West, as part of Guerrilla Games’ reforestation project, which would plant a tree each time a player gained a certain achievement in the open-world RPG. Horizon Forbidden West is one of the best PlayStation exclusives, and it seems that the popularity of the post-apocalyptic title helped to make the world a greener place.
Horizon Forbidden West was released in 2022, receiving glowing reviews from most critics, who praised the game’s story and beautifully detailed, immersive environments. At the time, the creators of Horizon Forbidden West unveiled a reforestation partnership with Arbor Day Foundation and other organizations. For a month after the game’s release, each time a player unlocked the Reaching the Daunt trophy in the game, Sony would plant a tree.

Now, Guerrilla Games’ efforts bear fruit, as a recent video made by the Horizon Forbidden West creators revealed that over 600,000 trees were planted, greatly surpassing the initial expectations. Initially, the team planned to plant at least 288,000 trees as part of the project but managed to more than double that amount. In the video, Guerrilla Games’ environment artist Eva Tajovska talked about how, when working with in-game vegetation and researching for the project, the artists start to see nature in a distinct way, noticing small details, and how important it is to preserve it.
This feat was only possible due to the smashing success of Forbidden West. The game has been able to sell over 8.4 million units so far, many of them within the first month. To achieve the Reaching the Daunt trophy, gamers had to complete the first two story quests in Horizon Forbidden West and start the third one, To the Brink. The trophy is automatically collected at the beginning of the mission, meaning that most players who bought and played Forbidden West within that timeframe received it.
While Guerrilla Games is likely thinking about the future of the Horizon franchise by now, the studio is not entirely done with Forbidden West so far. Back in September, the existence of Horizon Forbidden West: Complete Edition was revealed. The game comes with both the base title and the Burning Shores DLC, is already available for PS5, and will be launched for PC in 2024. At the moment, the game does not have an official release date for PC, but it already has a Steam page and can be wishlisted. It’s selling for $70 on the PlayStation, so a similar price is expected for the PC version.
