In a shocking announcement at CES 2022, Sony unveiled the first real details regarding its PlayStation VR 2 setup. Sony has confirmed in the past it was something that was in the works, but to what degree and how far long it was hadn’t been clear. Now, it seems the recent PSVR2 production rumors are legit, and one flagship title for it has already been announced: Horizon Call of the Mountain, set in the same universe as Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West.

PSVR2 is described as a “true next-gen” experience with high fidelity visuals, sensory features, and enhanced tracking, all with a simple single-cord setup. Specifically, the PSVR2 boasts 4K HDR, 110-degree FOV, foveated rendering, a display resolution of 2000x2040 per eye on an OLED display, and 90/120Hz frame rates. The new controllers, simply dubbed Sense controllers and not to be confused with the standard PS5 DualSense controllers, features tracking based on the headset and reflects in the game without the need of an external camera.

Further details include eye-tracking so refined that looking somewhere is reflected in the game as additional input, coupled with other immersive features such as 3D AudioTech and headset feedback (the latter meaning fans can feel an elevated pulse, the rush of a passive object, or the thrust of a vehicle). It all sounds incredibly promising, but hardware without software that can match it means very little, even for PSVR2. Luckily, that’s where Horizon Call of the Mountain comes in.

Alongside the PSVR2 details, a teaser trailer for Horizon Call of the Moutain was also revealed. It is in development by Guerilla Games and Firesprite (a recent acquisition by Sony), telling a new story with a new protagonist. The trailer shows off some of the world, as well as one of Horizon’s fan-favorite machines, the Tallneck. Players will get to meet Aloy, familiar faces, and new characters in this all-new story set in the Horizon universe.

Not much else was revealed, but with it just being announced, it is an appetizing teaser. Various details regarding the PSVR2, like price and release date, have yet to be revealed, and more Horizon Call of the Mountain news will likely follow behind or alongside that. However, it should be noted that the developer stated fans will “soon” be journeying back into the wilds in Horizon Call of the Mountain, and that the new protagonist of the game will be revealed “soon” too.

For now, all fans can do is wait and see how soon "soon" is, but there’s little doubt that everything revealed so far for the PSVR2 is impressive.
