Ruan Mei is one of the new characters introduced in Honkai: Star Rail's version 1.6 update, joining the roster as a support character with unique abilities revolving around break effect and other utilities that enhance the team's overall damage. She is a versatile character that can fit into a variety of team compositions, depending on the players' roster availability.

In a typical composition involving Ruan Mei, the focus should be on a DPS character, a synergy-oriented support/sub DPS, and a sustainer to maximize the team's benefits. Fortunately, there are many characters that can fulfill these roles, allowing for a diverse range of team compositions without the need to use the same characters repeatedly, although this is certainly possible. Based on these criteria, here are some best team compositions for Ruan Mei, showcasing a variety of elements and playstyles in no particular effectiveness order.
5 Ruan Mei + Xueyi + Fu Xuan + Pela
Joining the roster alongside Ruan Mei, Xueyi offers a unique synergy with her due to their special interaction. Xueyi has the ability to ignore the elemental weakness type of enemies while using her Ultimate, still able to deplete their toughness and break with Quantum Break. This synergy with Ruan Mei allows Xueyi to deal even more damage, and with the Weakness Break efficiency provided by Ruan Mei, break weaknesses more often. Quantum Break is also one of the elements that benefits most from Ruan Mei's break duration extension, allowing Ruan Mei to deal more damage during the weakness break time.
As additional characters in this team, Fu Xuan can contribute defensively while providing a crit buff to the team, and Pela can further reduce enemies' defense and bring other added benefits. In general, utilizing Seele in this team instead of Xueyi can also work, especially if the enemy already has Quantum weakness. However, Xueyi offers more flexibility against different types of content.
4 Ruan Mei + Blade + Luocha + Bronya
Given that Ruan Mei doesn't provide an ATK buff like many other Harmony characters but offers various other benefits, she works exceptionally well with characters like Blade, who primarily scales with HP. Blade can effectively benefit from every buff Ruan Mei provides. Additionally, the combination of Blade and Luocha is already well-established due to their strong performance together. Notably, Ruan Mei and Blade are skill-point neutral, while Luocha is skill-point positive. This allows for Bronya to be well-utilized every turn without worrying about skill point management.
With this team composition, enemies weak to Wind, in particular, will be easy and quick to defeat. The composition leverages speed and advancing forward, providing ample room to take advantage of Ruan Mei and Bronya's buffs effectively.
3 Ruan Mei + Jingliu + Silver Wolf + Lynx
Ruan Mei also synergizes quite well with Jingliu, extending beyond just sharing the same elemental type. However, this synergy is particularly advantageous, especially if Ruan Mei is equipped with the Penacony, Land of Dreams planar ornament set to further increase Jingliu's damage. To enhance the team's effectiveness, Silver Wolf is another valuable addition. Together with Silver Wolf, players can ensure opponents always have either Ice or Quantum weakness, which helps with the use of Ruan Mei's abilities. Silver Wolf also inflicts various debuffs on targets, providing Jingliu with a significant advantage.
Considering that Jingliu drains HP from her allies while attacking during her special state, having a healer like Lynx becomes quite beneficial. Lynx does not hinder the weakness implant options and offers AoE healing, along with the ability to dispel debuffs from enemies and more. If players don't have access to Jingliu but want to create an Ice DPS-oriented team, Yanqing can be a suitable alternative while keeping the rest of the team composition the same.
2 Ruan Mei + Dang Heng Imbibitor Lunae + Welt + Huohuo
As a skill point-heavy character, Dan Heng Imbibitor Lunae benefits well from characters like Ruan Mei who do not need to consume skill points every turn. When the team includes a character like Huohuo, capable of increasing his attack and providing the entire team with energy, each character can use their ultimates frequently. This is particularly advantageous for Ruan Mei's consistency and also aids in easier skill point management for Imbibitor Lunae. Welt, who can imprison enemies without weakness breaking through his Ultimate, also benefits from this setup, especially if both Welt and Dan Heng Imbibitor Lunae are equipped with the 4-piece Wastelander of Banditry Desert set to further increase their damage.
However, it is possible to swap Welt out for another character like Tingyun to bring more consistency to energy regeneration and provide other useful buffs for Imbibitor Lunae. Another alternative is to replace Imbibitor Lunae with Dr. Ratio, as he can benefit from Welt's debuffs on the enemy while being a free and strong alternative as an Imaginary DPS.
1 Ruan Mei + Kafka + Gepard + Sampo
Considering that Kafka doesn't benefit from Crit-related buffs but benefits well from Break effect and duration due to her DoT-oriented playstyle, Ruan Mei becomes an excellent choice to enhance Kafka's potential. With Ruan Mei present, Kafka gains a speed buff, which complements her playstyle effectively. For DoT application synergy, Kafka can still benefit from another DoT-oriented character like Sampo, Luka, or even Serval, depending on the enemies' weaknesses.
As a sustainer role, players can essentially use any character they have available, as most of them will perform similarly alongside Kafka. Undoubtedly, characters like Huohuo might provide more advantage due to other synergy factors. However, those seeking a different or non-limited character option will find the most utility with Gepard. Other options like Natasha (especially if Luka is used instead of Sampo) or March 7th can also work well, provided that she is well-built to sustain on her own.
