Honkai: Star Rail's Firefly Has a Sad Backstory

Firefly became beloved because of her positive attitude, but behind her smile is a troubling past that led to her becoming a Stellaron Hunter. When Honkai: Star Rail players first meet Firefly at the start of the Penacony arc, her identity is a total mystery and some characters also hint that she might cause trouble in the Dreamscape. Firefly's role in the Penacony mission reaches its peak when she gets "killed" by the Memory Zone Meme in the dream, and later comes back to reveal that she's actually the Stellaron Hunter known as Sam.

Known as a towering armored machine, Sam (Strategic Assault Mech) is a Firefly Type-IV tactical heavy assault mech from Glamoth's Iron Cavalry. Firefly is the wearer of the armor because she suffers from Entropy Loss Syndrome as a result of experiments done on her since she was younger. She became a Stellaron Hunter in hopes of finding the meaning of life and pursuing ways to defy her fate of dying as a machine. In a conversation with Blade, she says that she wants to die as Firefly, not as Sam.

  • Stellaron Hunters: Kafka, Blade, Silver Wolf, Sam/Firefly, and Elio

Firefly will be the fourth playable Stellaron Hunter in Honkai: Star Rail after Silver Wolf, Kafka, and Blade. Based on initial Honkai: Star Rail gameplay leaks, Firefly is able to transform into Sam during exploration and battle, giving her significant stat buffs when she enters her mech state. As Sam, Firefly wields dual swords and has explosive abilities that deal damage to enemies.

Firefly's Future in Honkai: Star Rail is Unknown, But It's Exciting

The Stellaron Hunters in Honkai: Star Rail are elusive—they literally show up a few times, then disappear to continue their journey into the cosmos. Among the known members, the Trailblazer only regularly interacts with Silver Wolf, albeit only her hologram most of the time. Both Kafka and Blade have only shown up in flashbacks in recent updates, and it's possible that Firefly might follow the same pattern.

In Penacony, Firefly is able to experience the Dreamscape in her human form without worrying about her physical affliction. She also helps the Trailblazer seal the Stellaron that's plaguing the Dreamscape and makes sure that they accomplish their destiny according to their leader, Honkai: Star Rail's Elio's "script."

The Stellaron Hunters give a lot of importance to Elio's visions, and as much as possible, they don't veer too far from their perceived destinies. This may explain why the Trailblazer doesn't encounter them often, as they're following the script and jetting off to the next Stellaron-stricken world.

Firefly left Penacony before the big battle against Sunday, so she may either show up for a short time to say her goodbyes, or she has already gone to her next mission. Her future in Honkai: Star Rail is still up in the air, but it's also exciting to see how HoYoverse will bring her and the rest of the Stellaron Hunters back in the main story. As long as Stellarons still exist in Honkai: Star Rail's universe, fans will surely see Firefly and the gang again.
