Highlights

  • Hollow Knight: Silksong has been highly anticipated for years, with a release date that has been continuously ambiguous, leading to speculation about an early to mid-2024 release.
  • The pressure on Team Cherry to deliver a satisfying sequel to the critically acclaimed Hollow Knight might explain its cautious silence and the need to meet elevated expectations.
  • Following in the footsteps of Moon Studios, the creators of Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps, could be advantageous for Team Cherry, allowing the developer to reinvent the wheel and explore new narratives and worlds after completing the Hollow Knight saga.

It's no secret that Hollow Knight: Silksong is one of the most highly anticipated games of 2024, though its release date has been completely ambiguous over the past few years. Interestingly, though the Metroidvania platformer was first announced in February 2019, the last status update targeted a 2023 debut. While there hasn't been any official word from Team Cherry, people are now speculating that Hollow Knight: Silksong's release will be in early to mid-2024.

As the follow-up to the 2017 "Best Independent Game" winner at The Game Awards, it's reasonable to anticipate elevated expectations for Hollow Knight: Silksong. The cautious silence from the developer's end could speak volumes to the immense pressure it's facing. As such, though the Hollow Knight franchise is widely beloved, it could be advantageous for Team Cherry to take a page from Moon Studios' book after Hollow Knight: Silksong comes out.

Hollow Knight: Silksong Hallownest Related to Pharloom

The landscape of game development is dotted with countless indie studios, but their chances of breaking through the noise are often slim. However, Moon Studios, the indie mastermind behind the enchanting landscapes and emotional journeys of Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and theWill of the Wisps, was able to captivate players worldwide with its artistic prowess and mechanically challenging designs. Not only did the studio find success in 2015, but it was able to deliver a critically acclaimed sequel in 2020 despite the pressure to deliver a satisfying game with a compelling ending.

The similarities between Team Cherry and Moon Studios are uncanny, but the creators of Hollow Knight have yet to release its sequel. Regardless of how Hollow Knight: Silksong fares in the hands of the community, it may be optimal for them to follow in the footsteps of the other studio. In December 2023, Moon Studios announced a new game in an entirely separate genre. Bringing closure to the Hallownest saga with Hollow Knight: Silksong could free Team Cherry to reinvent the wheel, crafting an entirely new narrative and world to explore.

Team Cherry Could Break New Ground

While Hollow Knight: Silksong is undoubtedly carrying the weight of immense expectations, Team Cherry deserves the freedom to explore its horizons after this chapter closes. The team's creative spark thrives on defying expectations, and its next masterpiece could very well lie in uncharted territory. Of course, the theories that the Hollow Knight games will be a trilogy don't leave a lot of room for Team Cherry to break new ground in a vastly different game, so this potential future could be quite a ways out.

Nonetheless, whatever path Team Cherry chooses following Hollow Knight: Silksong's completion is bound to be an exciting one. With the indie studio's current track record, the possibilities beyond Hallownest could be truly electrifying. With any luck, this year, the developers will not only unveil updates on the sequel's progress but also lift the veil on plans for the future.
