With over five years having passed since the announcement of Hollow Knight: Silksong, fans of the franchise are eagerly awaiting any updates. The prolonged development period makes sense since the sequel was originally conceived as DLC for the original Hollow Knight. However, with the release of Hollow Knight: Silksong pushed beyond its initial target of the first half of 2023, fans are likely to grow more anxious the longer time passes.

Fortunately, recent comments regarding Silksong's production process have helped assuage the community. In June, a playtester working with Team Cherry reassured audiences that Silksong is not in development hell. With this in mind, and attention now turning towards August's Gamescom Opening Night Live and December's The Game Awards for a potential announcement, Team Cherry could seize this extra time to implement one simple yet highly anticipated feature into the sequel.

Silksong Could Fully Embrace The Hollow Knight's Community's Creativeness

Hollow Knight is Home to Hundreds of Customization Mods

Upon its 2017 debut, Hollow Knight captivated audiences with its engaging combat, stunning visuals, and immersive narrative. The game's crowd-funded success on Kickstarter led Team Cherry to deliver several post-launch DLCs, including the Hidden Dreams and Godmaster updates. Interestingly, a feature that was not included in this new content was the ability to customize The Knight.

Though personalizing The Knight never became an official option in Hollow Knight, community members were quick to find a solution. While there are more simplistic variations of The Knight donning apparel like bows, hats, and cloaks, some talented modders have demonstrated their ability to turn the protagonist into another character entirely. This includes, but isn't limited to, transforming The Knight into a grub, Demon Slayer's Tanjiro Kamado, and even Kingdom Hearts' Sora.

Notably, despite the Hollow Knight modding community offering a wealth of customization, installing them can be a hurdle some players aren't willing to jump. Of course, this doesn't mean this feature isn't incredibly desirable to the player base. To make these options more accessible, Team Cherry could take inspiration from its player base by directly integrating cosmetics into the sequel.

It goes without saying that accessories, skins, and cosmetics wouldn't need to be available on day one but could be added via a later update. While it's not confirmed if Silksong will have DLC, it's a plausible option based on the tremendous success of Hollow Knight's DLC. Additionally, given the projected vastness of the world of Pharloom, extra content could be desirable to complete unfinished narratives from the base game.

Building on the idea of obtaining cosmetics in true Metroidvania fashion, Silksong could make acquiring them a bit of a challenge. Similar to items like Keys, City Crests, and Mask Shards, some of these objects could be found by simply exploring the map. Not only would this encourage exploration, but finding all of these items could be quite satisfying for completionists. Naturally, they could also be used as rewards for defeating bosses or completing difficult platforming areas.

Furthermore, while community-generated content undeniably injects lively energy and fosters creative expression within the game, official cosmetics developed by Team Cherry possess their own distinct value. These cosmetics come directly from the game's creators, allowing players to adorn themselves with items and skins envisioned by the studio itself. Though Team Cherry likely won't need much help breathing life into Silksong, this would be a fresh and direct way to continue innovating within the franchise.
