Several games in the past few years have been announced much to the excitement of fans, and while some of them did end up launching, others were kept on the back-burner or "ghosted" the hyped players. This has become quite a common trend, with games like Avowed, The Elder Scrolls6, EldenRing, and of course, the long-anticipated sequel to the indie sensation HollowKnight, which is Hollow Knight:Silksong. Silksong follows the story of Hornet, a major character of its predecessor, as she ascends higher in a new kingdom full of coral forests, caverns rich with moss, and cities to reach the shining citadel, all the while Hornet fights opposing bugs.
The premise of Hollow Knight: Silksong is an epic one, and given the overwhelming success of the first game, many fans are impatient to play this one for a long time and discover every little secret that Team Cherry hid. However, ever since the announcement in early 2019, Hollow Knight: Silksong has gone quiet and won't be at E3 this year, which doesn't sound great to those players who hoped a release window would be close. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be the case and considering the secrecy around the game, it's safe to assume that it is not entirely finished or polished just yet, meaning that Silksong's release date may be further down the line than some expect.
Possible Hollow Knight: Silksong Release Dates
Hollow Knight: Silksong not being at E3 was disappointing news to many fans, but the initial gloom soon made way for positive comments to support the developers at Team Cherry, showing them affection and understanding. Still, skipping E3 is no small thing considering how successful and popular games use it as a big stepping stone prior to launch, which could suggest Silksong is not releasing this year. Instead, it is quite plausible at this point that Hornet's adventures won't see the light of day until at least spring 2022, or even later, maybe in the summer, after successfully showcasing the game at next year's E3.
Thus, the chances of Silksong dropping at some point in 2021 are extremely slim, but that shouldn't be a killjoy for fans out there because the wait for the next Hollow Knight game can still be pleasant and full of things to do. In fact, while the fact that a release date is not yet on the table for Hollow Knight:Silksong, Aeterna Noctis is going to launch later this year. For those unfamiliar with the game, Aeterna Noctis is a brand-new IPÂ made by Aeternum Game Studios, and it draws inspiration from Hollow Knight for some of its areas and enemies, while also being a prime example of Metroidvania games.
If AeternaNoctis is not something players are looking forward to, there are a plethora of other indie titles that do have many similarities with Hollow Knight, including the critically acclaimed Hades, or the less recent ShovelKnight. Even Returnal, for those who managed to get their hands on a PS5, can be a great game to play while waiting for more news on Team Cherry's Silksong. Even then, E3 is likely to be packed with other unheard-of indie games that could do the trick just fine, and that's precisely because of how influential Hollow Knight became over time within its genre.
While it remains an unlikely possibility, Team Cherry could still have an ace or two up its sleeve and come up with a much closer release date for Silksong. After all, the new Hollow Knight game was not announced during E3 in 2019, and it would only be fitting for it to still release at some point this year to surprise fans. Time will tell, but here's hoping that Silksong does live up to the immense legacy left by its predecessor.
