Originally announced in 2019, fans have had a long wait for Hollow Knight: Silksong. With an initial flurry of announcements and behind-the-scenes looks, updates around Hollow Knight: Silksong have been fairly few and far between as the years went by. This has left many fans wondering when the follow-up to the hugely successful Hollow Knight will come out, and the delay has only increased anticipation for the sequel as players become more and more impatient. Thanks to the critical acclaim of its predecessor, Hollow Knight: Silksong has a lot to live up to, and this includes the first game's DLCs.

Even if players love a base game when it comes out, some will play it through once or twice and then move on to the next thing. Expansions are a great way to keep gamers invested and to add another layer to the initial title, like Hollow Knight's four DLC packs. Each one brings something different and adds its own elements to the original Hollow Knight experience. After the heights of expansions like Godmaster, it's hard to see how Hollow Knight: Silksong will be able to top it.

How Hollow Knight's DLCs Set The Bar

Hollow Knight DLC

Team Cherry's 2017 title Hollow Knight was a runaway success. The Metroidvania-style gameplay, charmingly macabre design, and punishingly fun combat culminated in a critical and commercial hit, and it was therefore unsurprising that a sequel was announced a few short years after its release. However, in between the upcoming sequel and the release of the first game, players were able to enjoy a selection of content packs that allowed them to delve deeper into the kingdom of Hallownest and encounter new challenges of a scale unseen in the base game.

DLCs like Hidden Dreams only added a handful of new content like a new fast-travel mechanic and two boss fights, but others like The Grimm Troupe brought with them a new major quest and fresh plotlines to unravel. Chief among these expansions, however, is probably Godmaster, which was a substantive addition to Hollow Knight and an exciting change of pace. As well as adding new endings, unique areas, interesting NPCs, and compelling lore, the Godmaster DLC was a whole new challenge for players that had beaten the base game. Gamers could face tougher versions of the enemies they came up against previously and the DLC also revealed different endings steeped in lore that opened up the world of Hollow Knight further.

How Hollow: Knight Silksong Could Respond

Godmaster might not be for everyone, especially those that already found the original combat and boss encounters in Hollow Knight a trial. However, for fans that had mastered the difficulty of the base game and had attuned themselves to the rhythm of its fights, Godmaster was an enjoyable elevation that truly tested their mettle and allowed them to come out the other side feeling like an untouchable, omnipotent deity. The reward for gamers' hard work – new areas and characters and another side to the story – made the commitment worth it, and gave fans something to aim for as well.

Hollow Knight: Silksong is moving the action to the kingdom of Pharloom, a new setting that makes the protagonist Hornet ascend up towards a shining citadel rather than emulate the Kngiht's exploration of the depths of Hallownest. There are a lot of changes coming with the sequel alongside Hollow Knight: Silksong's main character and location, and players don't even know if the sequel will be getting its own DLC. If Hollow Knight: Silksong follows in the footsteps of the first game, it will offer gamers a variety of expansions, but topping Godmaster is going to take a carefully considered, uniquely challenging, and undoubtedly rewarding experience that continues to build on the distinctive world that Hollow Knight: Silksong creates.

Hollow Knight: Silksong is in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
