As more video game events go by, fans cannot help but wonder if they will ever hear news about the titles they have been waiting for in the past year. Fans of Hollow Knight: Silksong were expecting to learn the release date in the last Indie World event, but unfortunately, there were no updates from Team Cherry. This has caused many to think that Hollow Knight: Silksong has become the Elden Ring of indie video games.
Because of how long it has been since the last information was announced, fans have gone crazy over and over again about the lack of news on Elden Ring. As more time passes, Elden Ring has become more of a meme itself due to the hype surrounding the game and the little amount of communication there is between the developer and the game's fanbase. Even though there have been a few more announcements about Silksong than about Elden Ring, fans have started to compare these two titles as they keep expecting updates in gaming events but are continuously let down.
Why is Hollow Knight: Silksong Such a Big Deal?
Hollow Knight is the first (big) title of the indie developer Team Cherry. The game was funded through Kickstarter, and once it was finally out, it did not disappoint the fans. The game has a massive map, over forty bosses, and four DLCs, one of which adds information to Hollow Knight's lore through two more endings.
Originally, Hollow Knight: Silksong was supposed to be a DLC as well, and part of the Kickstarter funds was supposed to go to its development. However, Team Cherry had to discard that idea because of how many changes it implied. In Silksong, players get to follow Hornet, one of the most important characters of Hollow Knight. Because of how different Hornet is to the Knight, Hollow Knight's main character, Team Cherry decided to leave this idea out of the first game.
In exchange, Team Cherry has created a whole new game based on the idea of Hornet's DLC. From what has been revealed so far, it seems like Hollow Knight: Silksong will have bigger maps to accommodate Hornet's taller size and more dynamic movements. Even though the game will definitely connect to its predecessor, there will be some significant changes in the gameplay that will make fans of Hollow Knight rediscover the game.
Elden Ring and Hype Overload
The main similarity between Hollow Knight: Silksong and Elden Ring is not exactly in the narrative or the gameplay, but how hyped these games have become. There are very good reasons to be excited about both of these games as the two have amazing features. Of course, the high anticipation on behalf of the fans can also backfire. On one hand, it is always amazing to have users rooting for a game that has not been released, but it is also hard to live to the expectations of every fan.
Elden Ring is being developed by FromSoftware, the same developer who created incredibly successful titles such as Bloodborne and Dark Souls. Hidetaka Miyazaki, one of the video game directors of FromSoftware, is responsible for Bloodborne and the Souls series, both of which have been critically acclaimed. This time, Miyazaki is working together with George R.R. Martin in the development of Elden Ring and the involvement of the creator of the Game of Thrones saga is promising. This information alone makes Elden Ring a title to be excited about.
While Hollow Knight: Silksong does not come from a developer as big as FromSoftware, Team Cherry has proven that it can create amazing games as well. Even though Hollow Knight is an indie title, it has amassed a considerable fanbase. Hollow Knight is known for being one of the best Metroidvania games with a complex narrative and a fun yet challenging gameplay. Furthermore, the game has great character designs and an amazing soundtrack to top it off.
Since Hollow Knight made such a good impression in the fan community, it is only natural that fans are excited to see the sequel. While there is not as much information as the fans would want, there have been enough reveals for the fans to start making up theories about what some of Hollow Knight: Silksong mechanics will be like.
Zero Updates on Elden Ring/Hollow Knight
Both Hollow Knight: Silksong and Elden Ring have been announced for a while, which means fans have been waiting for news for more than they would have wanted to. These two games were announced in 2019, and both of them are about to reach the two-year mark. Team Cherry started off giving updates about its sequel in their it, but the last entry on their webpage dates back to December 2019. The case of Elden Ring is still more strained since FromSoftware did not mention a single thing about its game throughout 99% of 2020. Last December, a couple of tweets acknowledged fans and the game, but that's it.
Because of how silent Team Cherry has been, fans tend to get excited whenever there is a chance to receive updates on Hollow Knight's sequel. Not so long ago, Silksong got its own spread on Edge magazine, and ever since the news came out, fans expected the feature to include a release date. Unfortunately, the Silksong article did not include any dates, although it did include plenty of details about the game which managed to get fans even more excited about the game.
Hollow Knight: Silksong is in development for PC and Nintendo Switch. Elden Ring is in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
