During the players journey through Hollow Knight, they will uncover the secrets of Hallownest bit by bit, slowly learning the truth of their arrival in this forgotten kingdom. After reaching a certain point in the story, players will be tasked to seek out and destroy the Dreamers.

First appearing before the player in Greenpath, the Dreamers are three beings that have placed Seals on the Black Egg Temple, which players must remove to reach the various endings. One of these Dreamers can be found in the Fog Canyon, guarded by a large jellyfish-like creature named Uumuu.

Reaching the Teacher's Archives

Hollow Knight Teacher's Archives

Before players can confront the Dreamers, they must first have reached the Resting Grounds and interacted with the memorial. After doing so, they will be given the Dream Nail by the Seer, a vital tool that is needed to bring low the Dreamers.

Monomon the Teacher can be found in the Teacher’s Archives within the Fog Canyon; however, players may recall from earlier trips to the area that much of it is inaccessible. Players must first have acquired the Shade Cloak to pass through the Shade Gate near to Cornifer’s location, or obtained Isma’s Tear to swim through an acid pool opposite Leg Eater’s residence in the Fungal Wastes to reach the eastern section of the Fog Canyon. Although it is one of the most straight forward boss battles, it is recommended to have both of these abilities for maneuverability purposes.

Uumuu's Attacks & How to Counter Them

Hollow Knight Uumuu using Chase

Chase

This attack will lock onto the player’s location and creates small bursts of lightning. As players move around the arena to avoid taking damage, the lightning will leave a trail behind them.

There are some environmental hazards that players should be aware of while avoiding Uumuu’s attacks. Players should aim to stay out of the acid pool as it will significantly slow down their movement speed, and the Monarch Wings will make jumping to platforms easier to perform.

Burst

The arena will be filled with bursts of lightning that players must dodge to avoid taking damage. There are two possible patterns for the lightning to appear in, but in both cases, the two lowest platforms will be safe to stand on so long as Uumuu isn’t occupying the space.

Hover

While not performing either of the above attacks, Uumuu will hover around the arena slowly pursuing the player as they move around. Uumuu will deal one Mask of damage if they are able to make contact with the Knight.

A Helping Hand

Hollow Knight Quirrel helping during Uumuu fight

Players will quickly realize that they’re unable to deal damage to Uumuu due to the gelatinous membrane that surrounds it, but there is someone who can cut through it. During the battle, Quirrel will appear to aid the Knight and will strike Uumuu to expose its vulnerable core.

For a short time, players can deal damage while the core is exposed, before returning to evasive maneuvers once its membrane returns. Players will then need to wait until Quirrel attacks Uumuu again before using Nail or Spell attacks to whittle down their health.

Once Uumuu has been defeated, players will be able to progress further into the Teacher’s Archives to find Monomon’s resting place. When prompted, players can use the Dream Nail on Monomon to bring themselves one step closer to opening the Black Egg Temple, and reaching one of the endings.

Hollow Knight is available on PC, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
