Hogwarts Legacy: 12 Easter Eggs Only Die-Hard Fans Noticed

Hogwarts Legacy holds several secret nods to the Harry Potter books and movies, which only longtime fans will be able to catch.

While the end of Hogwarts Legacy leaves many questions unanswered, some of the newly introduced students and professors have glaring connections to their descendants. Avid fans of the movies and books will recognize these connections immediately, as a fair few of the characters in Hogwarts Legacy are related to Harry Potter characters, some in more direct ways than others.

Updated on May 18, 2024, by Ritwik Mitra: Hogwarts Legacy is a game that people were anticipating with bated breath, and the title certainly didn't disappoint upon launch. While players had issues with its formulaic open-world elements and simple story, all of these problems were swept under the rug when gamers became invested in the fun combat and amazing recreation of Hogwarts and its surroundings. Exploring the castle is easily one of the best parts of Hogwarts Legacy, and doing so allows players to encounter a wealth of characters who are related to some iconic Harry Potter figures in some way or another. Discovering who these characters are related to is a nice way to keep fans engaged, but some ancestry trees are harder to uncover than others.

14 Professor Cuthbert Binns

Professor Cuthbert Binns in Hogwarts Legacy
  • Family name mentioned in: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (GBA)

While most characters in Hogwarts Legacy are not alive during the timeline of Harry Potter for obvious reasons, there are a few outliers who are present in the series in a direct capacity. A hilarious example to point out is Professor Cuthbert Binns, a character who appears in a memorable moment in the game when players have to suffer through his intensely boring lecture.

It's a running joke that has been present since his appearance in Harry Potter, with Binns being such an aggressively boring professor that people regularly sleep in his class. It's a miracle that Hogwarts hasn't replaced this teacher with someone who makes the art of learning history more stimulating. Though little is known about Cuthbert's family tree, fans of The Chamber of Secrets on the Game Boy Advance may be aware of his father, Mr. Binns.

Who Is Mr. Binns?

Mr. Binns is Cuthbert's father, a character who has scarcely been mentioned in the series. The only time players learn about his existence is during a throwaway piece of dialogue uttered by Professor Binns in the GBA version of Chamber of Secrets, where he's about to reveal to Harry some sage advice his father used to give him, only to nod off and go to sleep before divulging this information.

13 Eldritch Diggory

A portrait of Eldritch Diggory in Hogwarts Legacy
  • Family name mentioned in: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Most players would laugh at the prospect of joining House Hufflepuff, especially since many agree that it's the least interesting house in the entire series. The data backs this, which is a shame since players will miss out on the only quest in the game that lets them visit Azkaban, a legendary prison that needs no introduction.

This quest is received after a conversation with the portrait of Eldritch Diggory, the fourth Minister for Magic, who requests the player's help to solve a murder that has remained a mystery for years. Suffice it to say, players shouldn't be surprised that the members of the Diggory family (including Cedric himself) are his descendants.

Who Is Cedric Diggory?

Cedric Diggory is a tragic student who crossed the path of Lord Voldemort upon the Dark Lord's return. Cedric Diggory was the first to fall to Voldemort in the build-up to the Second Wizarding War, and his death haunts Harry Potter due to the fact that they were good friends. Cedric was also a fierce competitor in the Triwzard Tournament.

12 Silvanus Selwyn

Sneaking up behind Silvanus Selwyn in Hogwarts Legacy
  • Family name mentioned in: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Most players who explore the Scottish Highlands will find themselves receiving various quests to take out certain problematic individuals who are causing problems for the local population. One of these bounties is placed on a man called Silvanus Selwyn, an Ashwinder lieutenant who has set up a base of operations at Clagmar Castle.

If audiences ever encounter the Dark Arts of Harry Potter, these spells and potions will certainly do the trick.

The mission itself is pretty routine, but what a lot of people may not be aware of is that his family name is present in the Harry Potter series as well, albeit in a reduced capacity. Only the most hardcore fans will be able to make this connection because of how subtle it is.

Who Is Selwyn?

One of the Death Eaters who works for Lord Voldemort, Selwyn rejoined his master's cause and aided him in a bid to hunt down Harry Potter when the Order of the Phoenix came to transport him to the Weasley House. After Voldemort's wand was broken in a clash with Harry, the Dark Lord ordered Selwyn to give him his wand, but Harry and Hagrid escaped before this could happen. Later, he appears at Xenophilius Lovegood's house when the Death Eaters are informed of Harry's whereabouts.

11 Poppy Sweeting

Havelock Sweeting's Ancestor

Poppy Sweeting in Hogwarts Legacy
  • Family name mentioned in: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone: The Video Game

Poppy Sweeting is one of the few students at Hogwarts with a major questline that weaves into the overarching narrative. Poppy’s quests revolve around magical beasts and poachers, particularly dragons. A member of Hufflepuff, Poppy excels in the Care for Magical Creatures class and has secretly befriended a Hippogriff named Highwing. She prefers to spend time with beasts as opposed to humans/students and has an affinity for them, much like her ancestor and Magizoologist Havelock Sweeting.

Havelock isn’t mentioned in the books, but those who have played the Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets video game adaptations will recognize him from a Chocolate Frog Card, where he can be seen stroking a Unicorn.

Who is Havelock Sweeting?

Havelock Sweeting lived between the years of 1634 and 1710. He was a famed wizard and Magizoologist who had a specialty and expert knowledge of unicorns, hence why his Chocolate Frog Card has him petting a delicate unicorn. Due to this relationship with the mythical horses, he was immortalized as a trading card, which is especially beautiful since he created many unicorn reservations. Havelock Sweeting would be proud of his descendant, Poppy, who does what she can to protect creatures from poachers, even though her parents are part of the problem.

10 Constance Dagworth

Possible Ancestor To Hermoine Granger

Constance Dagworth in Hogwarts Legacy
  • Family name mentioned in: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Constance Dagworth doesn’t have a major storyline in Hogwarts Legacy. However, players will come across her when they join the Crossed Wands Dueling Club. The Ravenclaw student participates in the first duel alongside Hector Jenkins and Nerida Roberts, providing players with a challenge with her superior wandwork. Constance may be related to Hector Dagworth-Granger, who is first mentioned in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Hector founded the Most Extraordinary Society of Potioneers and is believed to be a relative of Hermoine Granger.

When asked by Horace Slughorn whether this was the case, Hermoine wasn’t sure they could be related as her parents were both Muggles. But there’s a possibility that Hermoine’s ancestors were Squibs - people born into Wizarding families that don’t possess magical powers but still have them in their blood. So, while her parents may not possess wizarding powers, magic is in one or both of their bloodlines, so there is a chance that Constance Dagworth is related to Hermione.

Who Is Hermoine Granger?

Hermoine is one of the most well-known Harry Potter characters due to her friendship with Harry Potter himself and the relationship she develops with Ron Weasley. Hermoine was incredibly intelligent and composed, a gifted student born from Muggle parents. Yet, Constance Dagworth proves that perhaps there lies a spark of magic within Hermoine's bloodline, even if she proves that she doesn't have magic in her blood to be one of the most talented witches in the wizarding world.

9 Hector Jenkins

A Potentially Cut Weasley / Ancestor Of Karl Jenkins

Hector Jenkins in Hogwarts Legacy
  • Family name mentioned in:Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Like Constance, Hector Jenkins Crossed Wands Dueling Club. Players come across him when he, Constance, and Nerida challenge them to a duel. However, Jenkins wasn’t always Hector’s surname. In previews for Hogwarts Legacy, his last name was actually Weasley. Why this was changed is unknown, but Hector still retains the Weasley family's red hair and familiar facial features.

Instead, Hector could be related to members of the Jenkins family like Eugenia Jenkins, a Minister for Magic mentioned on Pottermore and Wizarding World, Joey Jenkins, a Beater for the Chudley Cannons Quidditch Team, and Karl Jenkins, a student during the time Albus Potter attended Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Karl was sorted into Hufflepuff rather than Gryffindor, the house of his potential ancestor.

Who Is Karl Jenkins?

Karl Jenkins features not in the main Harry Potter books but in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which was written as a broadway play to continue the story of Harry Potter as an adult. Karl Jenkins features somewhat in this story as a Hufflepuff student, who first expressed excitement at the idea of being in the same school year as Harry Potter's son, Albus Potter, but soon became just as bitter and spiteful as Draco Malfoy when he started all those years prior.

8 Professor Phineas Nigellus Black

Professor Phineas Nigelus Black in Hogwarts Legacy
  • Family name mentioned in:Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

According to his descendant Sirius Black, Professor Phineas Nigellus Black was the least popular Headmaster of Hogwarts. This is evidently the case in Hogwarts Legacy, as the vain and uncaring Pure-Blood waltzes through the castle avoiding its student body as much as he can.

Sirius Black is a direct descendant of Professor Black, and the two share an uncanny resemblance. The House of Black is one of the most prosperous families in the Wizarding World. Through Phineas, the Blacks share genetic connections with the Malfoys and the Weasleys. Narcissa Black married Lucius Malfoy, and Molly Weasley is connected through the Prewett family. Arthur Weasley’s mother is Cedrella Black, Phineas’ granddaughter.

Who Is Sirius Black?

Sirius Black came from a line of pure-blood wizards. Sirius has no blood relation to Harry Potter, but as the best friend of his father, James, Sirius became Harry's godfather and thus did everything he could to take care of him. Sirius was the odd one out in his family due to his disagreements with purity in wizard blood. He was also the only one to be sorted into Gryffindor, showing that he was the standout member of the Blacks. Because of this, it is likely that he wouldn't get on with his ancestor, Professor Phineas Nigellus Black.

7 Professor Matilda Weasley

Professor Matilda Weasley in Hogwarts Legacy
  • Family name mentioned in: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Thanks to Professor Black’s ineptitude for the job of Headmaster, it seems that most of his responsibilities are passed down to Professor Matilda Weasley, the Deputy Headmistress of Hogwarts. But that wasn’t always the path for her. Once she left school, Matilda became a Curse-Breaker for the Ministry of Magic – the same occupation her descendent, Bill Weasley, had at Gringotts. Matilda then returned to Hogwarts to teach Transfiguration and eventually helped run the school.

The relationship Matilda has with Ron Weasley and his family is obvious, but her exact lineage is more challenging to prove. With four generations between them, she could possibly be Ron’s great-great-great aunt or a distant cousin, as it doesn’t seem like she’s married or had any children. It could be assumed that the lineage of one of her siblings led to Septimus Weasley, who married Cedrella Black (Nigellus Black’s granddaughter) and then had Arthur Weasley.

Who Is Ron Weasley?

Ron Weasley is the best friend of Harry Potter, and the two seemed inseparable during their time in and out of Hogwarts. They were as close as family, and Ron was a great member of the Weasley family, which seems to extend all around and out of Britain, hence his relation to Matilda, who is assumed to have not had children of her own.

6 Ominis Gaunt

Ominis Gaunt in Hogwarts Legacy
  • Family name mentioned in: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Whether Slytherin or not, players will come across Ominis Gaunt in one way or another during their Hogwarts Legacy adventure – particularly during the “In The Shadow of the Bloodline” quest. Part of the esteemed House of Gaunt, Ominis is a direct descendant of Salazar Slytherin. Like his ancestor, Ominis can speak Parseltongue and perform dark magic. However, unlike the rest of his family, he doesn’t like to wield it – particularly since he has experienced the tortuous Cruciatus Curse.

These characters from Hogwarts Legacy are sure to remain fan favorites for years to come.

Ominis, like the rest of his family, are ancestors of Tom Riddle. Some Reddit users have theorized that Marvolo Gaunt was the sibling to have cast Crucio on Ominis and that, through him, Ominis is Tom’s great-uncle through Marvolo’s daughter, Merope Gaunt. Tom is named after his grandfather via his middle name, and he used this along with his first and last name to come up with the anagram “I am Lord Voldemort.”

Who Is Voldemort?

Born as Tom Riddle, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named became perhaps the most powerful and dangerous Dark wizard to have ever lived. On his mother's side, Voldemort was a descendant of Salazar Slytherin, as she was part of the Gaunt family. The relation to Ominis is quite sad, as he seems the only one in his family who knows how evil his family is, and it's a good thing he never lived to know of the terrors of Voldemort, the man who attempted to enslave muggles and good wizards alike.

5 Garreth Weasley

Ancestor To Arthur Weasley

Garreth Weasley in Hogwarts Legacy
  • Family name mentioned in: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Like his aunt, Professor Weasley, Garreth Weasley was sorted into Gryffindor. According to in-game lore, Matilda had “many nephews,” but Garreth’s penchant for mischief would suggest that he’s most likely the direct ancestor of the Weasley children in Harry Potter. This would make Garreth their great-great-great grandfather, but it’s possible that the genetic line leading to Arthur Weasley could come from a sibling.

Garreth gets the fifth-year student involved with a sneaky operation of collecting Dried Billywig Stings from the cellar at Honeydukes by using a secret passageway in the side quest “Dissending For Sweets.” The adventure sounds precisely like something Fred and George would do later down the line.

Who Is Arthur Weasley?

Arthur Weasley was the father of Ron Weasley and was an employee in the Ministry of Magic. Arthur believed strongly in equal rights for magic-users and muggles alike, and as the head of the Weasley family, he would certainly make his relatives and ancestors proud for standing for what was right.

4 Gerbold Ollivander

Ancestor To Garrick Ollivander

Gerbold Ollivander in Hogwarts Legacy
  • Family name mentioned in: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

The House of Ollivander is one of the oldest wizarding families specializing in wand-making. As of the late 1800s, Gerbold had retired from the Diagon Alley branch of Ollivanders and moved to their quieter store in Hogsmeade to help witches and wizards during their time at Hogwarts, including the new fifth-year student. If said student happens to be in Ravenclaw, he even has a specific task relating to Richard Jackdaw.

Gerbold Ollivander’s grandson, Garrick Ollivander, is a prominent character in the Harry Potter books and movies, even though he was captured by Voldemort in The Deathly Hallows. Thankfully, Harry, Ron, and Hermione were on hand to rescue him.

Who Is Garrick Ollivander?

The proprietor of Ollivanders at Diagon Alley, Garrick Ollivander, continues the line of his great family, whose members are often considered the greatest wandmakers in the entire magic world. Garrick Ollivander gave Harry Potter his wand and helped him to understand the truth behind the Deathly Hallows.

3 Victor Rookwood

Ancestor To Augustus Rookwood

Victor Rookwood in Hogwarts Legacy
  • Family name mentioned in: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

As one of the main antagonists of Hogwarts Legacy, Victor Rookwood is instrumental in Ranrok’s plan to achieve ultimate power through ancient magic. A menace to Hogsmeade, it would seem his penchant for misery runs in the family. But, despite being a descendant of Charles Rookwood – one of the Keepers of ancient magic – something changed along his bloodline before and after Victor that would continue into the world of Harry Potter.

Victor is an ancestor of Augustus Rookwood, a Dark Wizard and Death Eater loyal to Lord Voldemort. Augustus initially worked as an Unspeakable at the Ministry of Magic but then became a Death Eater and a spy for Voldemort during the First Wizarding War.

Who Is Augustus Rookwood?

Augustus Rookwood continues the line in his family that involves powerful magic and antagonistic roles, as Augustus acted as a spy for Voldemort and was imprisoned in Azkaban after being revealed by his comrade Igor Karkaroff. When he escaped, Rookwood served as a Death Eater, and his current fate after the Second Wizarding War is unknown.

2 Leander Prewett

Distant Relative Of Molly Weasley

Leander Prewett in Hogwarts Legacy
  • Family name mentioned in: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Leander Prewett is one of the many characters the player will encounter on their first day. After losing a duel to Sebastian and being saved from a falling dragon skull by Professor Dinah Hecat, Leander boasts that he “nearly put Sebastian in his place” before the new student bested the Slytherin in a duel.

The Gryffindor student doesn’t have much sway in terms of story, but his character is linked to Harry Potter in quite a significant way. His last name is important, as he’s a distant relative of Molly Weasley through her maiden name. The Prewetts are a Pure-Blood wizarding family known for their red hair.

Who Is Molly Weasley?

As Ron Weasley's mother, one would think Molly was always a Weasley due to how well she fits in with their family name and with her confidence and loudness. Molly began her life as Molly Prewett and was a member of one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight families. She is the last of the Prewetts, however, since her parents were killed in the First Wizarding War.

1 Helen Thistlewood

Distant Relative Of Cedric Diggory

Helen Thistlewood in Hogwarts Legacy
  • Family name mentioned in: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Helen Thistlewood is a retired Auror who worked at the Ministry of Magic after she left Hogwarts. The player meets her if they’ve been sorted into Hufflepuff as part of the “Prisoner of Love” quest, which takes place in Azkaban prison.

Helen extended Diggory family through her great-uncle, Eldritch Diggory, and so is a distant relative of Cedric Diggory. Eldritch was the Minister of Magic from 1733 to 1747 but died from a case of Dragon Pox. Eldritch also appears in Hogwarts Legacy through his portrait, aiding the player in solving the deaths of Richard Jackdaw, Anne Thisbe, and Apollonia Black.
