Hogwarts Legacy is set in the eighteenth century, which is hundreds of years before Harry Potter and his friends are born. This gives newcomers to the series an easy way to join in on the fun, though there are a few familiar characters that could make an appearance, including Nicolas Flamel. The talented alchemist can defy death, but he does not use his powers for evil. His appearance in Hogwarts Legacy could be intertwined with the moral choices players make, and he could also offer further insight into the strange world of alchemy.
After some delays, Avalanche Software's highly anticipated game is set to release in early 2023, and gamers have a few editions to choose from if they wish to preorder. All editions come with a few perks, though the biggest fans have their eye on the Hogwarts Legacy Collector's Edition, which comes with a floating wand that works using magnets. Already the edition has sold out, and copies are being resold online at exorbitant prices. Regardless of which edition fans pick up, it would be great to see Nicolas Flamel getting involved in the story somehow.
Who Is Nicolas Flamel?
Fans of Harry Potter will be familiar with Nicolas Flamel, as he plays an important role in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. He is introduced as a skilled alchemist and a close friend of Dumbledore's. He becomes one of the oldest wizards to ever live through his creation of the Philosopher's Stone - also known as the Sorcerer's Stone - which holds untold powers. Through the stone, he and his wife, Perenelle Flamel, live incredibly long lives, even for wizards.
Though Flamel has no ill intentions with the stone, it inevitably draws the attention of Dark Wizards wishing to use it for evil. Consequently, the stone has to be carefully guarded, lest it falls into the wrong hands. Eventually, Voldemort sets his sights on the stone, believing it will assist him in achieving immortality. The Dark Wizard is thwarted by Harry and his friends, though Professor Quirrell dies in the process. Recognizing the potential catastrophes that the stone could bring, Flamel agrees to destroy it even though it means he will no longer be immortal.
At the time of his death in 1992, he is six hundred years old, making him a very old wizard. However, when the time comes, he is ready for his demise, and he appears not to fear death. He would have been born in the fourteenth century, which would mean he is alive during the events of Hogwarts Legacy, which is set in the eighteenth century. Having such a wise and powerful character make an appearance in the upcoming game could open the door for plenty of interesting and informative plot lines.
Nicolas Flamel and Hogwarts Legacy
There has been no word on whether Flamel will appear in Hogwarts Legacy, though he is among a handful of characters from the Harry Potter novels who could realistically be featured in the game. It would be a missed opportunity if Hogwarts Legacy did not feature Flamel, or at least reference him in some meaningful way, as he plays an integral role in the Wizarding World. In addition to being a legendary alchemist, he also proves that though magic is a powerful tool, it is the user who decides whether it will be a tool of good or evil.
It appears that the upcoming game will allow players to decide whether they wish to stand against dark magic or whether they wish to embrace it. Should players choose to go the route of the good witch or wizard, it would be a smart idea if the game introduced Flamel as a figure who teaches players how to use magic for good, and how to resist the allure of dark magic. Flamel could also offer a peek into the mysterious world of alchemy, which would be a treat for Harry Potter fans. Though alchemy is an important form of magic that influences the events of Harry Potter in many ways, it is never explained in any detail, and the upcoming game could mend that.
Expectations are high for the upcoming game, and trailers have shown that it will offer gamers an immersive experience of Hogwarts castle. Players will be able to create their own character and uncover a mysterious ancient form of magic, as well as a Goblin Rebellion that is brewing. It pulled off correctly, it could be the most spectacular Harry Potter gaming experience to date.
