Highlights

  • Hogwarts Legacy achieved record-breaking sales in 2023.
  • Despite not fulfilling all fan requests, such as including Quidditch, Hogwarts Legacy received positive reviews and its popularity is evident from its sales success.
  • While there are currently no plans for DLC, the lack of additional content could signify the development of a sequel, as rumors suggest Avalanche Software is already working on Hogwarts Legacy 2.

2023 proved an excellent year for Hogwarts Legacy, given its record-breaking sales that made it one of the year's best-selling games. Hogwarts Legacy's massive commercial success is hardly surprising since Harry Potter fans have long been asking for an open-world game set in the wizarding world. Now, despite not fulfilling every request fans expected from a game set in the Harry Potter universe, Hogwarts Legacy mainly received positive reviews, and its record-breaking sales are a testament to its popularity.

Of course, much of Hogwarts Legacy's success can be attributed to its vast open-world environment combined with a story campaign that takes players to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and its surrounding locations. With Hogwarts Legacy finally released for the Nintendo Switch in November, the game is now on every platform it is meant to be on, which begs the question of what is in store for the game in 2024, if anything.

Hogwarts Legacy raised eyebrows by not punishing the use of Unforgivable Curses, and a sequel needs to fix the oversight if it wants to go darker.

Will Hogwarts Legacy Have DLC?

On average, Hogwarts Legacy takes around 65 hours to complete everything, and players who have embarked on every quest the game has to offer are probably wondering whether Avalanche Software plans to release DLC soon. During an interview at IGN Fan Fest last February, game director Alan Tew said, "We've been really heads down bringing [Hogwarts Legacy] to life. So, at the moment, there are no current plans for DLC."

Of course, this news proved to be a disappointment for many fans of Hogwarts Legacy, given all the potential additional content the game could offer. Since Hogwarts Legacy was announced, fans have been speculating whether the popular wizarding sport, Quidditch, will be a significant part of the game. While players can ride broomsticks and fly within Hogwarts Legacy's world, Quidditch was not included in the game.

It is worth pointing out that the game was only out for the PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S when Avalanche Software revealed no plans for a DLC expansion. Tew mentioned that the studio decided not to develop a DLC for Hogwarts Legacy at the time because the developers remained occupied with bringing the game to life. However, now that the game is out on all platforms it was meant to be on Avalanche Software could change its tune and develop DLCs, especially after the commercial success Hogwarts Legacy has enjoyed so far.

2024 Will Probably Be A Quiet Year for Hogwarts Legacy

Assuming that Avalanche Software will stick to its decision not to bring any additional content to Hogwarts Legacy, players can expect a quiet year for the game. However, the lack of plans for a DLC expansion could also point to something even more significant for the game. While a sequel remains unannounced, Hogwarts Legacy's sales success all but guarantees another game in its future.

Last September, a prominent leaker named MyTimetoShineHello claimed that Avalanche Software is already developing a sequel for Hogwarts Legacy. The leaker's post did not provide specific details about the claim that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is in the works; still, it is worth noting that MyTimetoShineHello has a proven track record for big MCU leaks. Of course, while the prospect of Hogwarts Legacy 2 is exciting, fans shouldn't keep their hopes up until an announcement from an official source is made.

Assuming that the leaker's claims are true, though, could explain why Avalanche Software decided not to introduce any DLC expansion for Hogwarts Legacy in the long run. Additionally, if Hogwarts Legacy 2's development did start late last year, fans shouldn't expect any major announcements this year, given that developing a game to succeed Hogwarts Legacy successfully would likely take a long time to reach a point where an announcement could be safely made. Either way, there's no expectation at the moment that such an announcement will be made in 2024.

Hogwarts Legacy: Possible Game Updates in 2024

While it appears that Hogwarts Legacy will transition onto the sidelines this year, the game will likely receive minor updates throughout 2024. It is worth remembering that the Switch version of Hogwarts Legacy was released last November, and a pretty hefty update was received the month after. The latest update for Hogwarts Legacy on the Nintendo Switch covered a wide array of bug fixes and improvements, including but not limited to:

  • Addressed book on the pedestal from clipping while playing
  • Addressed textures flickering when avatar stands at a specific distance in the Gilded Perch
  • Addressed avatar not being able to destroy the pillars after restarting mission
  • Addressed some save game issues
  • Addressed new additions and edits to the game credit listing
  • Addressed when reloading from last save after rescuing the phoenix makes the avatar repeat their meeting line despite the phoenix not being there

Apart from the general improvements mentioned above, the latest update for the Switch version of Hogwarts Legacy also tackled other areas such as audio, avatar and character improvements, combat, and enemies. All versions of Hogwarts Legacy appear stable, though fans have been requesting additional quality-of-life features such as the ability to change seasons in Hogwarts Legacy. While 2024 will most likely be a silent year for Hogwarts Legacy, Avalanche Software will likely continue releasing patch updates throughout the year, especially with the Switch version of the game out now.
