  • Gold is the currency in Hogwarts Legacy and is used for various purchases, so players should always have a decent supply of it for better equipment.
  • Players can obtain gold by fighting enemies or selling items, such as inferior handwear, weaker cloaks and robes, and rescued beasts, to vendors in Hogsmeade.
  • It's recommended to sell obsolete facewear, useless neckwear, well-appointed gear, and even extraordinary and legendary gear if they have better alternatives or are at a lower level, as it can provide a good amount of gold.

The wizarding world features a unique currency, unique to wizardkind. Gold is used for all manners of trades in Hogwarts Legacy, whether it's for the purchase of clothes, potions, ingredients, and other assortments of goods and necessities. Sell Value: 30 Galleons

When players start their wizarding adventure, they will be gifted with a set of clothes. Whilst it's not recommended to run around Hogwarts without them, the customization option will unlock every set of clothing in Hogwarts Legacy the moment they are acquired, so players can happily sell their standard gear the moment it is acquired. The default outfit will be listed as standard gear (gray rarity) so it's best to get it off as soon as possible.

Hogwarts Legacy: Gear Rarity Explained

Hogwarts Legacy uses a gear rarity system to show how powerful the various magical clothes players can find are, but the system can be confusing.

Standard gear has no use other than to players who like to keep the original set, even if that means they get no advantage on armor class and enchantment potential. It's best to just sell the standard gear straight away, as although 30 Galleons is not a lot, it's best not to clutter inventory for items and gear that will be obsolete and discarded the moment players acquire something better.

10 Inferior Handwear

Over 43 Handwear

As for Gear, Handwear is a piece of armor that is used to cover up the hands of the player. Handwear can be used as a fashion statement, but it can also grant the player bonus benefits, like damage resistance stats and other boosts. Yet, as players continue to explore through Hogwarts Legacy and learn valuable lessons from classes, they can gain grand rewards, and they may find that some of the Handwear they acquire is inferior.

There are many different Handwear options in Hogwarts Legacy, and it’s best to sell all of the ones that lack the best stats, including the worst Traits. By selling the worst Handwear in Hogwarts Legacy, players can obtain an easy bout of gold for loot they do not need.

9 Weaker Cloaks And Robes

Over 482 Cloaks & Robes

Clothes are essential to Hogwarts Legacy. It would be improper and impolite for a wizard or a witch to run around Hogwarts or Hogsmeade with nothing but pajamas on. Luckily, players will be spoilt for choice when it comes to their Cloaks and Robes, so it’s best to sell the weaker pieces of Gear that will be found among the many possible adventures the player can have.

Players unlock each new cloak and robe as an appearance option that can be altered at any time, so they will not have to worry about losing a piece of Gear that is fashionable and cool. Players can instead focus on the Stats and Traits of their Cloak and Robes, allowing them to sell the worse gear for gold.

After acquiring the Nab-Sack, and completing the Beast tutorial with Deek, players will be able to rescue beasts from poachers, or even add them to their collection. However, since the Room of Requirement can only hold so many of these magical beasts, it may be in the best interest of the player to sell them. Beasts may be cute and fascinating, but it would be unwise to horde them all, and keep them in the infinite supply of the Nab-Sack.

The Slytherin common room contains plenty of details and nods to the Harry Potter books that Hogwarts Legacy players might not notice at first.

If players venture to Hogsmeade, they will be able to find the Brood and Peck shop. Here, players can sell their caught beasts to the shopkeep, who promises to take care of them and provide them with a loving sanctuary. Beasts can range in price, which is a great reason players should explore Hogwarts’ surrounding areas, and obtain the rare beasts in Hogwarts Legacy to sell for gold.

7 Obsolete Facewear

Over 40 Facewear

Eyewear and masks of wizards and witches can be found with Facewear. This group of Gear will give players bonus stats, and it’s worth collecting the very worst stats and Traits that can be found on each Facewear piece of Gear so that they can sell them to any vendor in Hogwarts Legacy that does not mind a worse piece of Gear.

There's a lot that players can buy in Hogsmeade, but when it comes to these items, players are better off saving their money.

It’s best to always have the best stats in Hogwarts Legacy, so selling the obsolete Facewear that the player might find in their travels, means that they will constantly have an income of gold for finding worse Gear than the mysterious fifth-year student is already using.

6 Useless Neckwear

Over 68 Neckwear Items

There are some useless Neckwear Gear pieces in Hogwarts Legacy that players will want to fill their inventory with and then sell immediately. The different selection of scarfs may not look the most fashionable, but the granting of bonus Traits and stats means that players might want to wear something to keep the neck warm, or to use the transmog system to alter appearances.

There are tons of Neckwear options, so players might find themselves picking up a new piece of Neckwear on each enemy they loot, or each chest that they open. It’s best to return to Hogsmeade straight away to sell these scarves, so they do not clutter the inventory of the player.

5 Well-Appointed Gear

Sell Value: 60 Galleons

The different gear levels in Hogwarts Legacy will see players obtain Well-Appointed as the most common, and as annoying as Peeves. Well-Appointed gear is indicated by its green color, and will usually have the lowest stats. Well-Appointed gear is pretty useless if it does not have better stats than the player’s current equipment.

Part of the uselessness of Well-Appointed gear is the fact that it cannot be upgraded, nor can it be given any attachments or traits. This means that the player should always sell this gear. Even if the gold is not great, it’s still worth selling to free up gear slots.

4 Superb Gear

Sell Value: 90 Galleons

The next level on the Hogwarts Legacy gear rarity is Superb, which is shown through its blue color. This is less common than Well-Appointed but also does not offer much better defenses or uses, making it on par with the common Well-Appointed gear.

Should a sequel ever be released for Hogwarts Legacy, these are just a few of the features a part two of the game would need to have.

The advantage of Superb gear is the fact that players will find this rather frequently, which means more gold when sold. Superb gear can also be upgraded, but only for the sake of having level 1 Traits. It's good in the early game, but players will quickly find better gear.

3 Less Powerful Headwear

Over 82 Headwear Items

Headwear is the key to fashion in Hogwarts Legacy. With each piece of Headwear the player finds, they can obtain more fashion options. Whether that is through a tophat or something that makes them look more like an old-school wizard. Each piece of Headwear gear will be unlocked as an appearance option, so players do not need to worry about selling worse Gear.

By selling the worst Headwear in Hogwarts Legacy, players are finding no disadvantages. They can clear up their inventory space, look for more powerful Headwear, and get gold, all whilst not losing the customization option from the Gear piece they sell.

2 Extraordinary Gear

Sell Value: 150 Galleons

The second-best rarity in Hogwarts Legacy is the Extraordinary gear, which players will note through its purple color. Extraordinary gear is far rarer than Superb, and will probably be the gear that follows the player throughout the majority of Hogwarts Legacy and the many explorative areas, side quests, and main missions. This is because, although rare, it is still discoverable.

With Extraordinary gear, players will have a decent level of stats, and the gear can be upgraded from Level 1 traits to Level 2 traits. This advantage over Superb means that players can have better attachments to their outfits, and to better fight Ranrok’s loyalists, and other unsavory enemies. Still, if players are happy with their current gear, selling any new Extraordinary gear that they find will net them some impressive gold.

1 Legendary Gear

Sell Value: 200 Galleons

selling legendary gear in hogwarts legacy

The last and best gear in Hogwarts Legacy is Legendary Gear. This rarest type of gear is shown through its gold/orange color, and will truly buff the witch or wizard that wields it in the 5 gear slots that can be equipped. Having a full set of Legendary Gear will make the player a feared or respected witch or wizard, depending on what spells they cast.

Although Legendary Gear costs more to upgrade, it’s the best of the lot, and can have up to Level 3 traits, the only gear type with that cost. As well as its power, Legendary Gear can be sold when its level is insignificant or inferior, meaning that players will get a large amount of gold for selling this gear.
