Hogwarts Legacy is where players can explore new areas, raid camps, and solve various puzzles to earn rewards. One of those puzzles is the Merlin Trials, which are created by the legendary Wizard Merlin to distract his fellow Slytherin schoolmates.
The Trials are distributed throughout the Regions of the Hogwarts Realm. Locating them can be tiresome, as they won’t appear on the map unless players have come across them before during their exploration. Furthermore, solving the various Merlin Trials requires specific Spells and techniques for each one of them. Therefore, players should come prepared to face whatever challenges these Trials may throw at them in Hogwarts Legacy.
Updated on July 28, 2023, by Nahda Nabiilah: While solving Merlin Trials within any Region in Hogwarts Legacy, players are forced to use certain Spells like Confringo, Reparo, Lumos, and so on. Not all of these incantations are handed to players on a silver platter, as they have to complete certain Quests to learn new Spells. Luckily, the missions aren’t difficult and won’t require much effort from Students. Most of these Spells are rewarded upon finishing various of Hogwarts Professors' Assignments, which are triggered after finishing a Main Quest in Hogwarts Legacy.
All Hogwarts Valley Merlin Trials In Hogwarts Legacy
Hogwarts Valley has 16 Merlin Trials that can be solved in any desired order. The 16 Merlin Trials in Hogwarts Valley are:
- Stone Sphere Puzzle x3
- Brazier Puzzle x2
- Broken Statue Puzzle
- Firefly Puzzle x2
- Orbs Pillars Puzzle x2
- Orbs Platforms Puzzle x2
- Stone Pillar Puzzle
- Platform Bridge Puzzle x3
Merlin Trial #1 - Stone Sphere Puzzle
Teleport to The Mine’s Eyes Floo Flame in Hogwarts Legacy, and head west to locate the first Merlin Trial in Hogwarts Valley. To solve it, cast Revelio to locate the sphere location, then use Wingardium Leviosa or Depulso to get it inside the pit.
Merlin Trial #2 - Brazier Puzzle
The second Merlin Trial in Hogwarts Valley is found south of The Mine’s Eyes Floo Flame. Solving this puzzle requires igniting three Braziers with the Confringo Spell in Hogwarts Legacy. Use Revelio to easily locate the Braziers. From the Merlin altar, it’s possible to find a pillar northwest, southwest, and northeast.
Merlin Trial #3 - Broken Statue Puzzle
The third Merlin Trial is northwest of the Northern South Sea Bog Floo Flame. The Trial is located inside an enemy camp, so players should clear it out first. To solve it, locate three broken statues and cast Reparo to fix them. The statues can be found:
- South of the Trial Altar
- West of the Trial, behind some vines (cast Incendio to burn them)
- North of the Trial, behind a few crates
Merlin Trial #4 - Stone Sphere Puzzle
The fourth Merlin Trial is north of the Keenbridge Floo Flame. To solve this Trial, players must cast the Wingardium Leviosa Spell on the sphere behind the Hamlet shop and guide it into the pit across the bridge.
Merlin Trial #5 - Firefly Puzzle
The fifth Merlin Trial location is northwest of the Keenbridge Hamlet. This Trial has three Moonstone pillars that need fireflies to light up. Guiding the three swarms of fireflies can be done with the Lumos Spell in Hogwarts Legacy.
From the Merlin altar:
- Turn southwest to find a swarm under the stone bridge
- Turn west to see the second swarm
- Run east to lure the third swarm
Merlin Trial #6 - Orbs Pillars Puzzle
The sixth Merlin Trial in Hogwarts Valley is northwest of the Keenbridge Floo Flame. It is located in an abandoned castle that is swarmed with Ashwinders. By defeating the enemies, players will be able to break the nine orbs within the castle walls and solve this Merlin Trial. Use the Confringo Spell to destroy the orbs from a distance, and cast Revelio to easily locate them.
- Three pillars are found north of the altar
- Three are west of the Merlin altar
- Run south from the altar and turn right to find the final three pillars
Merlin Trial #7 - Orbs Platforms Puzzle
Head east from the West Hogwarts Valley Floo Flame to arrive at the seventh Merlin Trial. This Trial is also in the middle of a Loyalists' camp that needs to be cleared out. The puzzle requires finding the orbs and luring them back to the three platforms. To do so, players must cast the Wingardium Leviosa Spell in Hogwarts Legacy.
- Head west to find the first group of orbs alongside its platform
- Enter the gate south and pull the orbs to the platform outside the gate
- Go east and destroy the wooden barricade to find the final platform with its orbs, hidden under a rock
Merlin Trial #8 - Orbs Pillars Puzzle
Head south from the Lower Hogsfield Floo Flame to find the eighth Merlin Trial in Hogwarts Valley. Players have to break nine orbs with the Confringo Spell in Hogwarts Legacy to complete the Trial. Since the orbs are distributed around the altar, they can easily be highlighted with the Revelio Spell.
Merlin Trial #9 - Orbs Platforms Puzzle
Go northwest from the West Hogwarts Valley Floo Flame to locate the ninth Merlin Trial in Hogwarts Valley. It is all the way up the mountains of the Valley, right next to the Feldcroft Region in Hogwarts Legacy. To solve this puzzle, players must find the three platforms and their orbs. Next, they need to cast Wingardium Leviosa to lure the latter to the former.
- The first group of orbs is found southeast, on top of a small hill next to a platform
- Head north past a platform and destroy the stones to reveal another group of orbs.
- From the altar, climb the slope northeast to find the final orbs and guide them to the third platform
Merlin Trial #10 - Brazier Puzzle
Teleport to Central Hogwarts Valley Floo Flame and head southeast to locate the tenth Merlin Trial beside the river. Solving this puzzle requires lighting up three Braziers with the Confringo Spell, preferably in order from the tallest to the shortest. From the altar, turn southwest to find a Brazier near the bridge while the rest are found along the way by going northwest.
Merlin Trial #11 - Stone Pillar Puzzle
The eleventh Merlin Trial location in Hogwarts Valley is south of the Central Hogwarts Valley waypoint beside a bridge. Solving this requires players to blast five pillars with any Spell in Hogwarts Legacy. The pillars can be easily spotted after using the Revelio Spell.
Merlin Trial #12 - Stone Sphere Puzzle
Teleport to Brocburrow Hamlet and walk west to locate the next Merlin Trial in Hogwarts Valley. Upon arriving, players can activate the Trial by offering it some Mallowsweet in Hogwarts Legacy.
Afterward, players need to head south to guide the sphere into its pit while using the Wingardium Leviosa Spell. It is also possible to roll the sphere directly into the pit by using Depulso after clearing its path from obstacles.
Merlin Trial #13 - Firefly Puzzle
From the Brocburrow Hamlet, head northwest to find the thirteenth Merlin Trial in Hogwarts Valley. Upon starting the Trial, cast Revelio to find the three Moonstone pillars, then search for the swarm of fireflies around them. Use Lumos to lure the fireflies to the Wand and lead them back to the Moonstone Pillars to solve this Merlin Trial. The three swarms are found in proximity to the moonstone pillars.
Merlin Trial #14 - Platform Bridge Puzzle
The fourteenth Merlin Trial in Hogwarts Valley is west of Brocburrow Hamlet on a hill. To easily solve this Trial, players need to climb and step on the stones without falling.
Merlin Trial #15 - Platform Bridge Puzzle
Fast Travel to The Mine’s Eye waypoint, and head north to find the fifteenth Merlin Trial in Hogwarts Valley. Walk across the stone platforms without falling to solve this puzzle.
Merlin Trial #16 - Platform Bridge Puzzle
The sixteenth and last Merlin Trial in Hogwarts Valley is located south of the West Hogwarts Valley waypoint, between two mountains near a cave. Due to its location high up the mountain, this Merlin Trial requires players to use a Broom or a Flying Mount to reach it in Hogwarts Legacy. Similar to the previous puzzles, players must jump across the stone platforms without falling.
All Necessary Spells To Solve Merlin Trials In Hogwarts Valley
A good chunk of Hogwarts Valley’s puzzles doesn’t require any Spells in Hogwarts Legacy.
Depulso
- Puzzle: Stone Sphere Puzzle
Professor Sharp plays a huge role in learning Depulso. That’s because the Potion Professor sends players to complete two specific tasks during Professor Sharp’s Assignment 1 Quest in Hogwarts Legacy. The two tasks are:
- Acquire and use a Focus Potion.
- Acquire Maxima and Edurus Potions, and use them simultaneously.
Wingardium Leviosa
- Puzzle: Stone Sphere Puzzle
Wingardium Leviosa is the renowned Spell that’s typically taught to first-year Hogwarts Students. To learn the Levitation Spell in Hogwarts Legacy, Professor Garlick’s Assignment 1 Quest must be completed.
Confringo
- Puzzle: Stone Pillar Puzzle And Brazier Puzzle
Confringo is a powerful Spell that deals decent damage when fighting enemies. Another great feature about Confringo is its long range, making it perfect for the Brazier Puzzle. Acquiring Confringo can be done upon triggering In the Shadow of the Undercroft Quest, which belongs to Sebastian Sallow.
Reparo
- Puzzle: Broken Statue Puzzle
Attending the Defense Against the Dark Arts and Charms for the first time as a fifth-year Student can be a bit overwhelming. Luckily, Professor Ronen takes players to the courtyard and assigns them a few simple tasks in exchange for learning a vital Spell, Reparo.
Lumos
- Puzzle: Firefly Puzzle
Other than the obvious use for Lumos, players can use the light to lure in moths and fireflies or to repel Devil’s Snare. Students are taught Lumos by Professor Fig in one of the early Quests, which is The Path to Hogwarts.
Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC. PS4, Xbox One, and Switch versions are currently in development.
