Another Hogwarts Legacy update may be in the works, according to some newly surfaced evidence. The purported patch may reach Hogwarts Legacy players in fall 2024.

The immensely successful Harry Potter RPG has received a dozen patches since hitting the market in early 2023. The latest such release arrived in the form of the big Hogwarts Legacy update that dropped on June 6. While Avalanche Software never claimed that this patch would be the final one, some fans assumed that to be the case, not least because Hogwarts Legacy is not a live-service game planned to benefit from years' worth of support. The widespread rumors of Avalanche Software already working on a sequel have also contributed to the fandom's belief that the studio is getting ready to move on from its 2023 hit.

Hogwarts Legacy Steam Repo Hints at Fall 2024 Update

But the time to do that may not be here just yet, according to a recent update pushed to the game's Steam repository. The change, documented by third-party scrapper SteamDB, reveals that Avalanche Software created a new development branch of the game on June 3. Called "fall24_development," the branch's moniker appears to suggest that another Hogwarts Legacy update is in the works and will be coming in a few months' time.

The fall24_development branch was removed from the game's Steam repository four days later, on June 7. But another one emerged in its place, called "branch_development." Based on the similarities in their depot contents, it would appear that the two branches may be one and the same, i.e., that Avalanche Software simply decided to change the original moniker to a less revealing one.

This interest-piquing bit of developer activity was observed just as rumors of a director's cut edition of Hogwarts Legacy started gaining online traction. But even if there's some truth to those rumblings, there's nothing to really indicate that the newly spotted fall 2024 update hint is related to that hypothetical new version of the open-world RPG.

The existence of yet another Hogwarts Legacy development branch isn't the only sign pointing to the existence of at least one more future update for the game. Another such indication was recently offered by Avalanche Software Community Manager Chandler Wood, who revealed that the developer has been internally discussing the possibility of adding the much-requested New Game Plus mode to Hogwarts Legacy as of early June 2024. In the meantime, the game's latest update that introduces features like the Photo Mode and the ability to reset Talent Points is now available for download on both PC and consoles.
