Hogwarts Legacy: 12 Easter Eggs Only Die-Hard Fans Noticed

Hogwarts Legacy holds several secret nods to the Harry Potter books and movies, which only longtime fans will be able to catch.

This list provides everything players need to know about the various magical creatures in Hogwarts Legacy, from the resources they provide and their locations on the map to the different color variations that can be found and even the toys they enjoy playing with the most.

Updated March 18, 2024, by Joe Grantham: Hogwarts Legacy was the best-selling game across the globe in 2023, which is unsurprising given the popularity of the Harry Potter franchise. While Hogwarts itself, Quidditch, and spells are arguably the most loved aspects of the wizarding world, magical creatures are right behind them. As such, this list has been updated to include even more details on all the magical beasts in Hogwarts Legacy.

1 Diricawl

Difficulty To Catch: Medium

Two Diricawls in Hogwarts Legacy

Diricawls are one of the most interesting species in the Harry Potter universe, as they actually explain the apparent extinction of Dodos in the real world. They are plump and fluffy flightless birds that, for all intents and purposes, are Dodos to Muggles.

However, what Muggles don't know is that this species of bird can turn invisible when threatened, a fact that explains their apparent disappearance. In Hogwarts Legacy, Diricawls come in a fantastic variety of colors that differ for males and females.

Difficulty To Catch: Hard

Hogwarts Legacy pink and green Fwoopers

Fwoopers are one of the many species of bird to be found in Hogwarts Legacy, although players might not want to keep too many of them in their Vivariums, as their song can be known to incur madness.

With owl-like faces and cute pastel color variations, Fwoopers make quite the impression on players who are able to catch them mid-flight. Their favorite toy, a Quaffle, also makes them one of the most fun creatures to play with for those with a particular fondness for Quidditch.

Seeing as the other beasts in Hogwarts Legacy are magical birds or mammals; the Giant Purple Toad certainly stands out. Furthermore, even with the word 'Giant' in its name, players still might be surprised or even scared of just how big they are.

Hogwarts Legacy: The 10 Most Fun Spell Combos

There are plenty of fun spells available in Hogwarts Legacy, and combining them in unique ways can produce unexpected results.

Due to how high they jump, these magical toads can be fairly hard to catch, meaning players will need to use spells like Levioso. In the wizarding world, their warts are used in a variety of potions. In the game, however, these Toad Warts are simply used to upgrade a variety of gear.

4 Graphorn

Difficulty To Catch: Very Hard

Hogwarts Legacy Male Graphorn

Graphorns are easily the strongest beasts in Hogwarts Legacy, and unlike other creatures, players must first best them in combat before using the Nab-Sack to take them home to their Vivarium.

Towards the end of the main story, players will be tasked with the taming of a male Graphorn by the name of The Lord of the Shore as part of San Bakar's Trial. Players will then ride this Graphorn, making it the only ground mount in the game. With the ability to trample and charge at foes, Graphorns are by far the best mount for combat. They are also surprisingly fast.

5 Hippogriff

Difficulty To Catch: Hard

Hogwarts Legacy Highwing The Hippogriff

Hippogriffs are among the most iconic magical creatures in the Harry Potter series, and the mission in which players take to the skies atop Highwing is one of the most magical moments in all of Hogwarts Legacy.

Given the size of Hippogriffs and the fact that they can run incredibly fast and, of course, fly, they can be rather difficult to catch, and players might need to use multiple control spells. Their majestic beauty, however, makes them more than worth the effort, and by breeding a male and a female, players will get to see what baby Hippogriffs look like. Sadly, players won't be able to fly the Hippogriffs they catch or breed, but there is always Highwing and Caligo, an onyx Hippogriff.

6 Jobberknoll

Difficulty To Catch: Medium

Jobberknolls may not seem that interesting or even magical at first, but if players pay close attention, they will notice that these birds don't make a sound. However, according to their description, they do eventually make a sound upon death.

Thankfully, this isn't something players will have to experience in Hogwarts Legacy, as their Vivarium animals cannot die. Their impressive tail feathers also make the flight of a Jobberknoll quite the sight.

7 Kneazle

Difficulty To Catch: Easy

Kneazle in Hogwarts Legacy

Kneazles are very often mistaken for ordinary cats, but in fact, these magical creatures are extremely intelligent and have a knack for detecting suspicious people. Interestingly, this is exactly why Hermione's half-Kneazle, half-cat, Crookshanks, went after Ron's rat Scabbers, knowing him to actually be Peter Pettigrew.

In Hogwarts Legacy, Kneazles make great pets, and players can have endless fun using spells on the Yarn Ball toy and watching their furry friends chase after it. Players can even name their Kneazle after their own cat, adding another personal touch to a game already full of nostalgia and magical moments.

With their huge adorable eyes, Mooncalves have the ability to melt the hearts of even the darkest wizards in Hogwarts Legacy. However, as their name suggests, players will only be able to catch them at night when they emerge to dance.

Mooncalf Fur, which can be procured by consistently feeding and brushing Mooncalves, is crucial for many Gear upgrades when players first get their Enchanted Loom.

9 Niffler

Difficulty To Catch: Medium

While Nifflers did feature in the Harry Potter books, they were first popularized by the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film, as Newt Scamander had a Niffler called Teddy. These mischievous creatures are known for their incessant love for gold and will go to any length to get their pesky hands on some.

Unlike the other magical creatures in the game, there is only one Phoenix that players can find, which sadly means they cannot be bred. This Phoenix is found during the aptly named Phoenix Rising quest and is truly resplendent.

Completing this quest will also unlock the fourth and final Grassland Vivarium, a stunning retreat resembling the Scottish Highlands that is perfect for the Phoenix to soar around in.

Difficulty To Catch: Easy

Puffskeins are arguably the cutest beasts in Hogwarts Legacy and make for perfect pets, although their owners may be surprised to find out just how much they like to eat bogies.

Nevertheless, they are great magical creatures to start off with for budding magizoologists, as they are easy to capture with the Nab-Sack and get along with all other beasts.

Unicorns, synonymous with beauty and purity, are also notoriously hard to find in Hogwarts Legacy. In the few places these majestic beasts can be found on the map, only one will emerge at a time, meaning that players will have to be extra diligent with their Nab-Sack.

Difficulty To Catch: Hard

Thestrals are misunderstood creatures in the wizarding world, often synonymous with death in the minds of witches and wizards. This is due to the fact that only those who have seen death can, in turn, see them.

However, Thestrals are actually peaceful creatures and have their own beauty about them, making them perfect beasts to care for in one of the Vivariums. Additionally, if players own the Dark Arts Pack DLC, they will be able to ride a female Thestral called Sepulchria, one of the best mounts in Hogwarts Legacy.
