Hogwarts Legacy remains one of the most financially successful games of 2023. After years of waiting for a game that captures the magic of the Harry Potter books and films, Avalanche Software delivered a product that lives up to the lofty expectations of fans across the globe. Now that a few months have passed since Hogwarts Legacy's initial release, many are wondering what kind of DLC support the game will get. Unfortunately, those fans may not want to hold their breath for very long, as Avalanche doesn't have any substantial DLC plans at this moment.

Avalanche has expressed that the reason it doesn't have any solid DLC plans is because it focused on ensuring the base game is released smoothly. While this is commendable and those efforts have mostly paid off, one would think that Hogwarts Legacy would ride the hot hand and at the very least tease a future expansion. In a world of live-service games and ongoing support for single-player as well as multiplayer releases, it's become the norm for AAA titles to have DLC plans shortly after a successful launch. While Hogwarts Legacy DLC may or may not come in the future, it seems Hogwarts Legacy is leaving money on the table for the moment.

It's hard to overstate just how well Hogwarts Legacy has sold since it was released on next-gen consoles and PC this past February. The game continues to top sales charts to this day, and this streak of success has been aided by Hogwarts Legacy's recent release on PS4 and Xbox One.

With such a wide playerbase, it would be in Hogwarts Legacy's best interest to pursue DLC plans as soon as possible. Avalanche doesn't have to come out with a major expansion by this summer, but any kind of plan for extra content would ensure gamers continue to play or pick up the game if they haven't already.

The Gameplay and Narrative Potential of More Hogwarts Legacy DLC

Hogwarts Legacy created a strong foundation for Harry Potter-inspired storytelling, bringing players to the magical school during the late 1800s. While it didn't share too many direct connections to the source material, there were still many familiar family names. Hogwarts Legacy DLC could give greater depth to its supporting characters, specifically Hogwarts headmaster Phineas Nigellus Black. The Black family is one that many passionate Harry Potter fans are enamored by, and with the absence of Dumbledore in Hogwarts Legacy, a closer look at Black could prove enjoyable.

In terms of gameplay, Hogwarts Legacy adapted many of the wizarding world's spells into combat and puzzle-solving mechanics. The game's combat in particular contains a fair amount of depth, as crafty players can create powerful spell combos to take down foes. Hogwarts Legacy DLC could expand the pool of available spells to add greater diversity to its gameplay opportunities.

Additional DLC could also add more tamable beasts to Hogwarts Legacy, giving players more ways to enjoy the many fantastic creatures of the Harry Potter franchise. Hogwarts Legacy delivered on many of the dreams of Harry Potter fans looking for a desirable AAA game. Now that players know what Avalanche is capable of, it's a mystery why the game hasn't jumped on any DLC opportunities.

It's still likely that Hogwarts Legacy could get an expansion late this year or early next year, but for now, it seems to be leaving money on the table. With only the Switch version of Hogwarts Legacy left to be released, fans can only hope that some kind of announcement for DLC will be made before Avalanche decides to fully dive into a potential sequel.

Hogwarts Legacy is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
