Hogwarts Legacy not only allows players to explore the illustrious School of Witchcraft and Wizardry it is named after but also the surrounding 19th-century Scottish Highlands. The absolute best way to do this is from atop one of the mounts available in the game.

From the lofty heights of a broom, Hippogriff, or even a Thestral, the expansive world of Hogwarts Legacy can be seen in all its beauty. These winged creatures can also run on the ground, though not as fast or as ferociously as the Graphorn. Furthermore, unlike other open-world games, players don't have to wait for their mount in Hogwarts Legacy, as they all instantly appear. This is thanks to the power of magic.

Updated on May 6, 2023, by Joe Grantham: Most open-world games tend to feature horses or cars as mounts and when flying mounts such as airplanes are available, they are usually large and clunky. It is perhaps for this reason then, that the mounts in Hogwarts Legacy prove to be one of the best aspects of the game. As the game becomes accessible to more Harry Potter fans with Hogwarts Legacy's release on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, even more players are able to experience the joy of soaring high above Hogwarts on their favorite mount. More about the Hogwarts Legacy mounts are also constantly being discovered as players unlock more of the game's secrets.

5 Sepulchria The Thestral

Hogwarts Legacy Flying On Sepulchria The Thestral

Players who own the Deluxe Edition of Hogwarts Legacy have access to a unique mount, a female Thestral called Sepulchria. While all players can tame and breed Thestrals, only Sepulchria can be flown, and she will be unlocked with the other flying mounts after completing "The High Keep" quest. Thestrals have a great sense of navigation and are perfect for long journeys, making Sepulchria one of the best options when traveling far across the map.

One of the best things about flying on a Thestral in Hogwarts Legacy is knowing that most of your classmates, professors and much of the surrounding population will see you seemingly riding the air, as Thestrals can only be seen by those who have seen death. As Sepulchria comes as part of the Dark Arts Pack, she complements gothic and darker aesthetics which Hogwarts Legacy players might be going for.

4 Highwing The Hippogriff

Hogwarts Legacy Highwing The Hippogriff

Highwing is a beautiful white Hippogriff who players will be introduced to by Hufflepuff companion Poppy Sweeting after their Beasts class. However, only at the end of "The High Keep" quest will they get to fly this magnificent creature for the first time. Thanks to an epic rendition of Buckbeak's Flight, that kicks in as players fly back to the castle, this experience is more than worth the wait.

After their first flight, players will then be able to take to the skies whenever they want atop Highwing, very often with the iconic soundtrack blasting away. Other than recreating Harry Potter's own Hippogriff flight over the Black Lake, players will find that Hippogriffs are also great for long-range journeys, especially while high in the sky where brooms are at a disadvantage.

3 Caligo The Hippogriff

Dark and majestic, Caligo is an Onyx Hippogriff, and due to the fact that he is only accessible to those who preordered the game, he is the rarest mount in Hogwarts Legacy. For those who do own Caligo, they will still have to complete "The High Keep" quest which unlocks all the flying mounts. After that, the world is their oyster, and they can travel to any of the most interesting locations in Hogwarts Legacy on the back of this stunning beast.

With the heavy flaps of his wings and a rendition of Buckbeak's Flight in their ears, flying on a Hippogriff is a treat for the ears as well as the eyes in Hogwarts Legacy. Although Caligo flies just the same as Highwing, the other Hippogriff in the game, there is something special about Caligo, perhaps due to appearing the most different when compared with Buckbeak from the books and films.

2 Lord Of The Shore A Graphorn

Hogwarts Legacy Male Graphorn

Easily the most unique mount in Hogwarts Legacy, the Graphorn known as Lord of the Shore is the only ground option in the game. Graphorns are the strongest beasts in Hogwarts Legacy and extremely rare. However, in order to climb on the back of this behemoth mount, players will have to progress fairly far through the story. As part of San Bakar's Trial, players will finally encounter Lord Of The Shore and have the chance to tame him in the manner they see fit. The exhilarating ride back is one of the best moments in the entire game.

After this quest players can mount their new Graphorn whenever they want. While players can't take to the skies as with other mounts, the Graphorn is extremely fast on land and can even charge enemies down. The option to engage in combat with this mount gives players an alternative to constantly taking down Hogwarts Legacy's foes with spells.

1 A Fully Upgraded Broom

Hogwarts Legacy Flying On Silver Arrow Broom

In terms of versatility and ease of access, the best mount in Hogwarts Legacy is undoubtedly a broom, especially one that has been fully upgraded. From almost any position, including water or halfway down a cliff, players can easily hop onto their broom and be up and away in seconds. The smaller size of the broom, especially when compared with other mounts, also means that players can fly through more densely packed areas, and they will find that they have greater control over their movement.

While there are thirteen different brooms available to be unlocked or purchased in Hogwarts Legacy, these only differ in appearance, all possessing the same stats. To go faster on their brooms, players can instead acquire upgrades from the passionate owner of Spintwitches Sporting Needs, Albie Weekes. The three upgrades available are applied to all brooms and boost their speed and acceleration.

Hogwarts Legacy is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, with a Switch version coming July 25.
