Highlights

  • Hogwarts Legacy 2 may feature known or unknown characters, but regardless, it should set itself in a dark period like Deathly Hallows for a gripping storyline.
  • Players could choose their own houses with impactful differences, exploring discrimination, Death Eater rule, and immersive RPG elements.
  • If set during Deathly Hallows, developers would face the challenge of covering wider storylines and elements beyond just Hogwarts, but that hard work could absolutely pay off.

Hogwarts Legacy 2 is almost certainly under development, but there has been no official news regarding it. Despite that, Hogwarts Legacy 2 continues to drum up a lot of hype; one of the major points being speculated characters and settings. To that end, the number of choices available is simultaneously staggering and quite limited. It has a plethora of settings to choose from, one being the "climax" to The-Boy-Who-Lived's tale - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

For starters, Avalanche Software and Portkey Games could choose to pick an unknown character or one that fans know. Similarly, Hogwarts Legacy 2’s setting will likely drive ahead in the timeline. It seems unlikely that the sequel will be set before Albus Dumbledore became the Headmaster or during his rise to glory. And while Tom Riddle’s early years could also work, a student protagonist at the castle during the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows would work wonders for the game's dark elements and potential story depth.

Hogwarts Legacy 2 and the Power of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

The events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows were easily some of the darkest in the series, showing the worst things Lord Voldemort did during his second rise. If Hogwarts Legacy 2 is set during this period, following an older student, the sheer number and nature of storylines available to developers is exhaustive. Further, doing so would offer a look at life in the castle under Death Eater rule, a part that fans only have a partial idea about and not deep details.

For starters, if players are allowed to choose their own houses in this Harry Potter universe's game, but with more impactful differences than a mere exclusive quest, the overall castle life and interactions will differ quite a bit. Hardcore fans may remember that Muggle Studies professor Charity Burbage was captured and killed. Also, the Carrow twins were terrorizing the school in the garb of teachers, and Severus Snape was pretending to be a loyal Death Eater to Voldemort. There was clear discrimination along the lines of Pureblood Supremacy and loyalty to the Dark Lord.

In light of this, players being able to choose their house and how they interact with others can hopefully add fleshed-out RPG elements and the Morality system that Hogwarts Legacy clearly lacked. Being able to choose the path to take, whether neutral, Dark, or Light, can give players great autonomy and enable them to have an immersive and emotional experience.

Hogwarts Legacy 2 May Need Time if Set During Deathly Hallows

Avalanche Software and Portkey Games will have big shoes to fill if Hogwarts Legacy 2 is set during the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Not only did it serve as the finale to the saga, but the scope also grew significantly from earlier entries. As such, the title will have to cover storylines and elements regarding not just the castle, but also the wider world.

This includes the school being in constant turmoil with the Death Eaters ruling Hogwarts, areas like Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade losing many shops, the Ministry pushing anti-creature and Muggleborn policies, and much more. If, say, the sequel starts off when Dumbledore is still alive and then continues, or if there are flashbacks to show the “good old days” with no Death Eater rule, the overall experience and emotional connection has the potential to reach a very high mark. But, the task is easier said than done.

Hogwarts Legacy 2 garnered a lot of positive reception for its world design of the Harry Potter universe, though not as much for its narrative strength. If it is set during Deathly Hallows, the developers will have a bigger playground, but a larger scope also makes matters more complex. It is hoped that Hogwarts Legacy 2 will improve key areas of exploration, have more fleshed-out stories and important locations, and add quality-of-life changes to existing gameplay mechanics. Given the expectations of the title, the developers may need to take all the time they can get to ensure the game meets the mark. Regardless of its choice of setting, hopefully Hogwarts Legacy 2 doesn’t repeat the mistakes its predecessor made.
