  • Hideo Kojima and Jordan Peele entered the stage through a door that's a replica of the one from PT.
  • The appearance of a plain wooden door onstage during The Game Awards has sparked excitement among fans hoping for a connection to Kojima's previous project, PT.

Eagle-eyed fans noticed a curious detail, the door from PT, during the The Game Awards 2023 presentation for OD by Hideo Kojima and Jordan Peele. After quite a bit of rumors and speculation that the legendary game director was working with Microsoft Gaming on a project, Kojima Productions’ Xbox-exclusive horror game was finally confirmed to be in development during the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2022.

Since then, in standard Kojima fashion, almost nothing had been revealed about the project until a trailer for the game was premiered at The Game Awards 2023. Of course, the short snippet did little to assuage the curiosity of fans, but it did reveal the all-star cast for Kojima’s OD and confirmed that the game will be created in collaboration with Jordan Peele, the highly reputed filmmaker behind the acclaimed horror films Us, Nope, and 2021’s Candyman.

Hideo Kojima Trolls PT Fans

In true Hideo Kojima fashion, the developer trolls gamers on social media with a possible P.T. or Silent Hills teaser.

After the short trailer for OD at The Game Awards, Kojima came out to discuss the project in a manner that quickly caught the attention of fans. A wooden door appeared onstage with a fluorescent light bar directly above it on the wall. This entryway, along with the light bar and pattern on the wall surrounding it, is a replica of the iconic door that appears at the beginning of PT, the playable teaser developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami in 2014.

For many gamers, be they fans of Kojima or horror games or both, PT is an enduring sore spot that combines anger, disappointment, and a faint bit of hope. PT was an interactive teaser for the game Silent Hills, which was supposed to be the next and long-awaited installment in the Silent Hill franchise. Not only were fans excited about the upcoming game, but they were thrilled to learn that Kojima would be working with Guillermo del Toro to create it. However, Silent Hills was cancelled by Konami and PT was removed permanently from the PlayStation Store.

PT had a lasting impact on many gamers who had the opportunity to play it, inspiring multiple projects, and the demo was critically acclaimed for the anxiety and dread it evoked with a simple looping hallway. The playable teaser provided a glimpse at what a Kojima Productions horror game might be like, and many gamers have hoped that PT would make another appearance, in some form at least, in a future Kojima game. So the innocuous appearance of a plain wooden door during The Game Awards 2023 has gotten a lot of fans even more excited about what Kojima Productions’ OD might have to offer.
