Highlights

  • CNMN steals the show with his bubbly personality, making friends easily with his charm and silliness.
  • Rekka's massive ego and brutal boss fight make her a memorable antagonist with superior strength.
  • Chai is an optimistic and vibrant protagonist, charming players with his passion for music and witty one-liners.

Alongside the plucky young Chai, the protagonist in Hi-Fi Rush's story, the game also introduces players to plenty of other fun and lovable characters along the journey. These individuals are memorable thanks to how well they've been written, as well as their appearances and designs, which are emphasized by the game's jaw-dropping visual style.

Not all of these characters are heroes, though. Hi-Fi Rush also features some outstanding villains who have made big impressions on players for one reason or another. Now that the game is available on the PlayStation 5 for more players to enjoy, it seems like the perfect time to reflect on the characters who stole the show, and what makes them so beloved as part of this amazing rhythm-based hack-n-slash title.

Here are a few beginner mistakes that newcomers should try to avoid when booting up Hi-Fi Rush for the very first time.

7 CNMN

Lightens Up A Room With His Bubbly Personality

CNMN robot with marks on his face

CNMN may not be as capable in combat as the rest of the crew, but when it comes to hatching ridiculous and over-the-top plans, nobody can do it quite like him. As the personal mechanical assistant of Macaron, CNMN is loyal to his master, but his charming and jovial personality makes it easy for him to make new friends. Players see this when he instantly forms a bond with Chai upon meeting him.

The biggest reason CNMN has become such a fan-favorite character is the simple fact that he's so much fun to be around. Whether he's drawing yet another silly expression on his face to show how he feels, or engaging in comical conversations with the rest of the gang, he's always there to lighten up the tone. With him around, the story never becomes too serious, so it's hard not to love him.

6 Rekka

Planet-Sized Ego & Brutal Boss Fight

Rekka stretching out her arms

As the leader of production at Vandelay Technologies, Rekka commands a lot of authority due to her position, and she's not shy about showing off. Rekka always speaks about herself in the third person, and boasts about her strength and efficiency to anyone that will listen. She even wears a buckle with the words "BOSS" written across it, in case it wasn't already clear that she's not somebody to be messed with.

Chai will come up against some formidable boss enemies during his adventure in Hi-Fi Rush, but which is the toughest of them all?

Though Rekka is already naturally muscular, she's also been fitted with several robotic implants, including on her arms, which allow her to annihilate anyone who dares to get close. This is demonstrated during her fight with Chai, where she can throw him around like a ragdoll thanks to her superior strength. Rekka's egotistical personality, mixed with her fun and vibrant design, makes her one of the most memorable antagonists of the game. It's only a shame she couldn't have stuck around for a little bit longer.

5 Mimosa

The Queen Of Spin Steals Every Scene

Mimosa

Mimosa is another employee of Vandelay Technologies, where she works as the glossy and glamorous head of advertising. The "Queen of Spin," which is a nickname that she gave herself, is all about being as extravagant as possible. She makes this very clear through her vibrant fashion sense, which features a cocktail of flashy colors. That's not all, though. Her clothes also help her out when it's time for a duel, specifically her dress, which can alternate between forms on command.

For example, Momosa's dress can allow her to fly around by growing wings, or can even spawn projectiles to destroy her enemies. Needless to say, whatever Mimosa wants, she gets. This level of entitlement makes her so fun to hate in all the right ways.

4 Macaron

A Fantastic Character Arc

Macaron and Chai

Macaron becomes one of Chai's closest allies once the two meet about halfway through the story. However, this lovable giant actually used to be an employee for Vandelay — that is, until he was kicked out. Macaron enjoyed his position as the head of R&D, but he was demoted and replaced with the malicious Zanzo once Kale took charge of the company.

Hi-Fi Rush: All Graffiti Locations

There are 24 different Graffiti illustrations to collect in Hi-Fi Rush. And, some of them are pretty well hidden, so let's go over each location.

After realizing Kale and his new employees were embarking on a journey of chaos and destruction, Macaron decided to link up with Peppermint, and became a valuable asset to her and the team. Macaron's constant back and forth between wanting to be a true pacifist while also possessing an underlying hatred for Vandelay culminates in a fantastic character arc, which is a highlight of Hi-Fi Rush's narrative.

3 Peppermint

Effortless Charisma Makes Her Fun To Watch

Like Macaron, Peppermint also has ties to Vandelay, despite wanting to bring them to justice during the course of the game. It turns out that at a young age, Peppermint decided to run away from home in an attempt to make a name for herself, but as soon as she was out of the picture, her brother Kale took the opportunity to take over Vandelay Industries. Kale also seemingly took it upon himself to completely erase Peppermint's existence on records, ensuring she wouldn't be involved with the company in any way, shape, or form.

As would be expected from anyone having to experience this kind of hardship, Peppermint has a lot of emotions which boil up inside of her due to her family's actions, eventually causing her to join the SPECTRA project with Chai and the others. Her fascinating backstory, paired with her vibrant design and cool laser blasters, all help to make Peppermint a great character.

2 Korsica

Becomes A Strong, Dependable Member Of The Team

Korsica snapping her fingers

From a young age, Korsica had always admired Vandalay Technologies. After all, it was them who helped to restore her hometown after a devastating ecological disaster, prompting her to join the company as she grew older to do her part in "saving the world" — or so she thought. Once she comes face to face with Chai, the young and rebellious protagonist starts to peel back the layers of Korsica's character. He reveals that she has doubts about her boss, and wonders why she's the only one who's restricted access to the SPECTRA files.

Chai's wise words help Korsica realize she was right to have doubts about Kale. She comes to admit that even though she's thankful to the company, that doesn't mean she must betray her own intuition and blindly follow them. Her sharp, stoic exterior starts to break down once she joins the crew, revealing a goofier side to her which lends to her already infectious charisma.

1 Chai

Just As Cool And Vibrant As The Gameplay Itself

Chai fist bumping 808 the cat

In a game already packed full of incredible characters, the developers need to go above and beyond to make sure the protagonist is just as likable. Tango knocked it out of the park with Chai. What's most noticeable about Chai is how optimistic he is. He's always able to look ahead, no matter how dire the situation gets. Though he once had dreams of being a rockstar, Chai worried he would never be able to live them out after badly damaging his right arm.

Though he did successfully gain a new robotic arm, Vandelay's assessment deduced he wouldn't be able to make it as a musician. It's lucky his MP3 fused in his chest when it did, giving him a second chance to live out his dream. Of course, Chai is also known for being very easygoing and relaxed, leading to some hilarious one-liners and clever quips which make him so much fun to play. He might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but Chai's charisma and undying passion for music makes him the perfect protagonist for Hi-Fi Rush. He's a memorable leading character who many fans have come to admire since the game's release.
