The trailer for season 2 of the HBO/BBC adaptation of Phillip Pullman's acclaimed His Dark Materials novels has been released during Comic-Con@Home. Based on the second book in the trilogy The Subtle Knife refers to a blade so fine that it could cut the fabric between worlds.

HBO released the full trailer via their YouTube channel with Comic-Con hosting an online panel discussion with the cast and crew soon after. One of the biggest additions to the cast is that of Andrew Scott (Sherlock) as John Parry and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) as the voice of his daemon.

Filmed before the first season was broadcast, and thus neatly avoiding the current Coronavirus pandemic, albeit with one episode scrapped, season 2 sees the return of Dafne Keen as Lyra and Amir Wilson as Will. Talking to Radio Times, screenwriter Jack Thorne said, “Will’s come from a situation where he’s not been able to trust anything, his life has taught him to trust nothing. And Lyra has learnt through series one that she can’t trust anything.”

For those who've missed both the books and first season, His Dark Materials is based on Phillip Pullman's novels set across multiple worlds following a young orphan named Lyra. While searching for her missing friend, she uncovers a series of kidnappings that are linked to a mysterious substance known as Dust.

Although there's no solid release date yet, the new season is expected to debut on both HBO and BBC One close to or around November, about a year after the broadcast of season 1. Looking like it'll be keeping up with the high production values of the Northern Lights adaptation, hopefully it'll be a hit with both fans of the original books and TV series.

The Subtle Knife is expected to launch on HBO in fall 2020.
