Tensions are high in the Harry Potter fandom as film star Emma Watson and franchise creator J.K. Rowling continue to be outspoken with their opposing beliefs on the same sensitive issue: transgender rights. In light of the recent controversies, Watson's fellow co-star Miriam Margolyes, who played Professor Sprout in the film series, offered her two cents on the situation.

While there are no reports of a legitimate feud existing between the Harry Potter icons, their difference of opinion has put long-time fans in an awkward position. Rowling has made several anti-trans statements over the years, while Watson has been supportive of the community.

In a feature published by Radio Times, Margolyes said that she would be willing to arbitrate between Watson and Rowling in the trans debate "if anybody asked" her to. Such a response is consistent with her co-star Evanna Lynch's recent statement, in which Lynch insisted that the Harry Potter cast is focused on finding ways to heal rather than continue fighting. Margolyes herself has made it clear that she does not side with either Watson or Rowling since, in her opinion, there isn't one answer to all of these trans questions. That said, she still expressed sympathy for Rowling, admitting that the vituperation she has received seems misplaced. She even went on to say that she admires her as a human being, calling her a generous woman and a brilliant writer, despite not knowing her personally.

This isn't the first time Margolyes has weighed in on the trans debate. Back in 2020, she explained the hugely complicated circumstances that Rowling faced before she made her controversial remarks, explaining that it is difficult to understand what trans people go through when you are not one. She used her own experience as an example to illustrate this point, stating that she is confident in defining herself as a lesbian and a woman, but other people who are one the way between one sex and another may not find it as easy to sort out.

As for Watson and Rowling, all rumors of a rift have been dispelled by Lynch, who told GB News previously this year that there is still mutual respect between the two even though they may not agree on the same things. Although it may be comforting for fans to know that there is no bad blood between them, it's safe to say that the Harry Potter fandom will never be the same again after everything that has happened since Rowling's first tweet regarding the issue.

The Harry Potter collection is now streaming on HBO Max.
