After weeks of wondering if Harley Quinn season 4 would become a reality, WarnerMedia has officially announced that the series will return for a fourth go-around on HBO Max.
Harley Quinn has always been a hit with the critics, but the merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery resulted in the CEO of the newly formed Warner Bros. Discovery cleaning house in order to cut costs, with certain HBO Max projects seemingly bearing the brunt of the money-saving measures. Fortunately, Harley Quinn has officially been renewed for a fourth season, and Sarah Peters will serve as the new showrunner.
Peters has been a writer on Harley Quinn since the first season and currently serves as consulting producer. Now, in addition to her promotion as showrunner for season 4, Peters will also be an executive producer for the series. "We are ecstatic that HBO Max wants the story of Harley and Ivy to continue," said Harley Quinn executive producers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker in a statement. "And we are equally thrilled that this next season will be in great hands with Sarah Peters as our showrunner and Ceci Aranovich overseeing animation production, as they have both greatly influenced the show with their brilliance since the beginning."
"Patrick Schumacker, Justin Halpern and their incredible team of artists and writers have created something so explosively funny and original and we are thrilled to continue this journey with them and the show’s legion of fans," added Billy Wee, Senior Vice President of Comedy & Animation, HBO Max. "It has been amazing to watch the show grow and evolve this season and we could not ask for a more talented and dedicated team of collaborators." Peter Girardi, Executive Vice President, Alternative Programming, Warner Bros. Animation, added that he is grateful for the partners at HBO Max for allowing the Harley Quinn team to continue, noting that he can't begin to think about the "new levels of chaos and trouble" that the titular character and the gang will get into.
While Harley Quinn season 4 had been in development before the official WarnerMedia announcement, the aforementioned cancellations and budget cuts at the behest of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav had many fans concerned about the show's future. Now their fears have been put to rest and the creators of the show can move forward with the comfort of knowing Harley Quinn is safe for another season.
Harley Quinn seasons 1-3 are now available on HBO Max.
