The animated Harley Quinn series is gearing up to return for its 4th season this year, and HBO Max is ready to bring it back. The surprisingly excellent show has been one of the streamer's unexpected hits over the past few years, a fact now reinforced by its appearance in a new sizzle reel promoting the platform's upcoming 2023 roster of shows.
While far from the only worthwhile offering on HBO Max, Harley Quinn was quickly renewed for a 4th season after its long-awaited 3rd one last year. It was clear from that move that the streaming service knew the series was worth keeping around, a sentiment held by fans ever since its 2019 debut through the agonizing wait between Harley Quinn seasons 2 and 3. So even though fans know a 4th season is on its way, they're familiar with the sting of being kept in the dark regarding their favorite show's future. Luckily, an appearance in a new promotional video should help quell any fears.
Shared on the HBO Max YouTube channel, the video shows off several new and returning offerings set to appear on the streaming platform throughout 2023. The unfortunate bit is that Harley Quinn only gets a few seconds of exposure near the end of the reel. That doesn't mean anything about what fans can expect from season 4, but it would have been nice to see something substantial. Still, a sizzle reel isn't about revealing plot details. It's about showing off what a given company has to offer, and HBO Max has plenty, even though many fans only have eyes for one show.
Harley Quinn sees the titular former lover and sidekick of the Joker finally striking out on her own and putting together her gang. That premise alone, along with the genuinely stellar comedic writing, would be enough to catch the attention of many potential viewers. But the show goes above and beyond by including several genuinely heartfelt moments among its often brutally hilarious and hilariously brutal highlights. There's even an upcoming Harley Quinn Valentine's Day special set to air ahead of the season 4 premiere, which should be an enticing prospect given the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the still relatively fresh new relationship between Harley and her long-time best friend-turned-love Poison Ivy.
As much as Harley Quinn would be enough to keep many coming back for more, HBO Max also offered several other reasons to keep watching in the sizzle reel. Some standouts include the highly-anticipated TV show adaptation of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us alongside returning favorites like Perry Mason and Succession, as well as fellow DC Comics favorites Doom Patrol and Titans. That's only a drop in the bucket, as 2023 still has plenty more to offer, and not just on HBO Max.
There's a lot to look forward to, and the year has only just begun. Still, Harley Quinn, in particular, is something special to many people. Is it a raunchy comedy? Is it a satisfying comfort show? It depends on who's being asked. But what matters is that it's finally coming back, and that's a point in 2023's win column.
