Father's Day is a day to celebrate dads of all backgrounds, genders, and affinity for bad jokes, and that also includes patriarchs of the fictional variety. The thing is, the tale of the deadbeat dad is a common one in many stories, including DC's Harley Quinn. So that offers an interesting snag to the whole occasion.
That trend is driven home in HBO Max's brilliant animated take on DC's Harley Quinn, which never pulls any punches on any issues. So it should come as little surprise to see the titular lovable villain herself offer a bit of snark on this day of a million dress ties. Harley Quinn herself, still waiting on her next season, made an extremely in-character post on Instagram to mark the holiday, and it goes hard.
Posting a not-quite-heartfelt message via the show's official Instagram account, the character of Harley offered a few words that probably won't be seen on any Hallmark cards, at least, probably none that don't feature any video game dads. The post uses an image from the show itself of a text conversation seen after Harley goes home for a catastrophically ill-fated visit with her family, fittingly summing up the event with "Dads Suuuuuuuck. LOL" ready to send. To add to that oh-so lovingly crafted message, the post's caption reads "Happy #FathersDay, hope your dads aren't pieces of sh*t like mine!"
Frankly, the only thing out of character here is Harley's self-censoring. Anyone who's seen the animated Harley Quinn series knows full well that overly coarse language is somehow the least potentially objectionable aspect of the show. Between a saturation of gory moments and plenty of adult themes, the censoring almost seems ironic at this point. But the unapologetic approach is very much on-brand.
Harley Quinn captured the hearts of audiences thanks to a number of factors, not the least of which includes its eclectic voice cast of talent like Kaley Cuoco as Harley and even new blood like What We Do in the Shadows' Harvey Guillén set to appear in season 3. As a black comedy, it earns its popularity from lots of over-the-top cartoon violence broken up with genuinely hilarious writing. But what really sets it apart is its surprisingly heartfelt character moments, building a cult following that not only resulted in an upcoming third season, but even a spinoff starring fan-favorite character Kite Man.
Happy Fathers' Day to everyone celebrating, and here's hoping all the dads out there who happen to be fans of Harley Quinn can find plenty of new jokes to pass the time while waiting for season 3. It may not be a remotely family-friendly show, but that just means it's one more thing for the world's papas to enjoy in peace out in the garage.
Harley Quinn is available to stream on HBO Max, with season 3 currently set to premiere sometime in 2022.
