Genre(s)
Survival Horror

The idea of reimagining the first game in the franchise was a bold one, and with the ambiguity related to the Silent Hill franchise in general, there was nothing all that wrong with the premise of this game. Indeed, Shattered Memories received good reviews generally, and managed to terrify players throughout, remaining one of the better recent entries in the series.

It also changed a lot about the gameplay and thus the difficulty of the franchise. Taking away combat and making the game a true survival horror where players mostly had to run sounded like it should make for one of the most difficult games in the franchise. However, to make up for this addition, it is generally much easier to navigate the town and to escape from the various monsters that players encounter.

7 Silent Hill: Downpour

Murphy Travelling Through An Abandoned Forest
  • Platform(s): PS3, Xbox 360
  • Released: March 13, 2012
  • Developer(s): Vatra Games
  • Genre(s): Survival Horror

Another more recent entry in the franchise that attempted to incorporate some experimental ideas, Silent Hill: Downpour was fascinating. Not only was the protagonist a far cry from the previous ones, an escaped prisoner called Murphy Pendleton who enters the town of Silent Hill unawares, but the gameplay had some major changes as well.

Returning to a more exploration-based format, Silent Hill: Downpour was found to be quite challenging because players simply didn't know what to do sometimes. Many of the puzzles in the game were considered especially sneaky, and the combat system was realistic. It's a little tricky to get used to and hard to get right consistently. Downpour was meant to be a true survival experience, and it succeeded in making players feel like their situation was hopeless at times.

Horror fans shouldn't pass up on these titles, which are considered by many to be the best psychological horror games out there.

This has caused many problems, particularly because of aspects like a lack of save points, meaning that players can be thrown back a long way if they are suddenly set upon. The running has also been criticized as slowing the game down and making it too difficult to escape from enemies, while the enemies and their ease in stopping the player dead in their tracks have also been bemoaned by players and critics alike.

Released

Developer(s)

Genre(s)
Survival Horror

Considered by many to be the best and most defining entry in the franchise, Silent Hill 2 dealt with a widower traveling to the town after receiving a letter from his dead wife, claiming she was there. The hardest thing about this entry is that the developers really wanted players to feel lost in the town, meaning that navigation and exploration can take a lot of work.

However, the actual combat isn’t too bad compared to some of the later entries, once players get used to the uncommon style. There is plenty of challenge to keep players engaged throughout this entry, without ever becoming too frustrating in most aspects. This is a large part of what helped the game become such a beloved success for the franchise, and why it is getting a remake.

4 Silent Hill: Homecoming

GameFAQs Difficulty Score: 3.15/5

Alex Sheperd From Silent Hill Homecoming
  • Platform(s): PC, PS3, Xbox 360
  • Released: September 30, 2008
  • Developer(s): Double Helix Games
  • Genre(s): Survival Horror

Instead of taking place entirely in the titular town of Silent Hill, this entry in the franchise first went to a place called Shepherd's Glen. Players take control of Alex Shepherd as he returns from war to his hometown and finds the place gone crazy, and his brother missing, which leads him down the path to Silent Hill.

Homecoming has a variety of challenges which give it an overall high difficulty. A lack of ammo and other items means players have to be exceedingly strategic about when to use anything. Additionally, there are many enemies with attack patterns that have to be learned. Players will find that some enemies can hardly be fought in melee fashion, like the smog monsters, and a good strategy for some of the longer sections is to simply avoid as many foes as possible, showcasing how Homecoming is a surprisingly difficult game for the era in which it was released.

The third entry in the franchise is renowned by fans and critics, not just for gameplay and challenge but also for narrative. Heather is an incredible character and her journey through the town and her fight against the cult make for an incredibly memorable, psychological tale focusing on women. The series took on more action and combat in this entry, leading to many more enemies and a lot more challenge from them.

Released
January 31, 1999
Developer(s)

Genre(s)
Survival Horror

The original game in the franchise, as with many first entries in other famous game series, wasn’t quite as polished as some of the later entries, but it was still one of the best horror games of the 90s. This is one of the reasons why the initial story has been reimagined and recreated so many times since the initial release. It also means that there is plenty of difficulty in this entry, with some of it being unintentional.

The search Harry Mason conducts for his daughter through the town is plagued by difficulty, especially due to limitations on ammunition, and an incredible ramping up as the game continues in the number of monsters around. Players have to learn how to escape many of these creatures without wasting ammo, or they’ll face the wrath of some of the hardest bosses in the series without enough left to tackle them. The puzzles in this entry were also head-scratchers, some of them providing much more real challenges than gamers were expecting in a horror game at that time.

Genre(s)

The fourth entry in the Silent Hill franchise is a wild one and one of the best PS2 horror games. Players who are in the know about many of the unexplained aspects and locations of various items will find it reasonable in difficulty terms, while players who aren’t and are taking it on for the first time will be gobsmacked with the challenges they face.

This includes the room, the only save point, becoming violently haunted unless players collect specific items and place them at specific points in the room, something that is never explained. There are also some brutal enemies throughout the game, such as the ghost, that Silent Hill fans will never forget due to the insane difficulty posed by this non-killable adversary.
