The newest of the Resident Evil remakes is certainly not the most challenging of the lot, but it has provided a lot of frustration for fans. The easiest difficulty, amateur, is only available in the Japanese version of the game. Ammo being too easily wasted and too tricky to find across the maps is one of the main problems that players often have.

The journey of Isaac Clarke aboard the Kellion was remade recently and achieved a fantastic response for a franchise that has been dead in the water for a decade. Dead Space is still a brilliant story, and the upgrades in the remake both graphically and in mechanics only add to the terror and challenge.

The difficulty of Dead Space remains high, as players attempt to navigate the ship and take down the Necromorphs infesting it. While there are lower difficulty settings that players can use, even the normal setting comes with a high degree of challenge that will make players struggle throughout their playthrough.

One of the most recent additions to the PlayStation 5’s list of horror games, Dead Island 2 is a long-anticipated sequel to a fantastic open-world zombie adventure. Coming with a healthy dose of horror as well as black comedy, this sequel features a lot of freedom but no options to turn the difficulty down.

This can make Dead Island 2 a challenge for players, especially early on. As the game continues, the enemies are scaled along with the player’s level, keeping the difficulty at a reasonable level without ever straying into impossible territory.

One of the most recently released scary games for the PlayStation 5, Alan Wake 2 has already been challenging players as they find out that the developers have added a lot of difficulty beyond that of the first game in this entry. While the first game was considered an adventure game with some horror behind it, the sequel is more easily described as an outright survival horror.

Following an FBI agent who comes to Bright Falls to investigate a sequence of ritualistic murders, Alan Wake 2 has already been highly praised for the story and gameplay, which provides plenty of scares. But the difficulty rate is also at some of the highest seen in the survival horror genre in recent years, and players may need some help getting started with it.

Almost all games in the Soulslike style come with a high level of difficulty, which is one of the main features of what makes a game similar to the Soulsborne franchise. Lies of P is a great Soulslike re-imagining of the Pinocchio fairytale, which comes with plenty of frights in a dark setting.

This wonderful grim fairytale-style setting is a great use of the format used in games like Dark Souls. The combat is challenging throughout while the story is dark and intimidating, providing players with plenty of tension and fear as they journey through the world of Krat. Though technically a grimdark story, there should still be enough horror elements here to satisfy most fans of the genre.

Returnal is an incredible game, which utilizes brutal difficulty with a harsh checkpoint system, making it violently hard to complete. Roguelike games often involve a lot of learning via deaths, and Returnal is a perfect example of this, constantly frustrating players with a huge amount of dying and retrying areas.
