Highlights

  • Halo fans have been disappointed with recent entries in the franchise, but the Master Chief Collection has been well-received, especially for its anniversary remasters.
  • Halo 3, which was released over fifteen years ago, is still beloved by fans, and a remake would be a great way to bring old fans back and give new fans a fresh experience.
  • The classic style of Bungie-era Halo games is highly favored by the fanbase, and a Halo 3 remake with the option to switch between old and new graphics would be a surefire hit.

It's no secret that Halo has been in a pretty divisive spot for a long time. Ever since 343 Industries took the helm of the franchise back in March 2012, the Halo games have had their ups and downs. Halo 4 was fairly well received, but its follow-up, Halo 5, was an overall letdown for fans of the series. The latest entry in the series, Halo Infinite, has had an even more turbulent story. Each of the recent Halo games has been plagued with some degree of challenge, whether it be delays, cut content, over-monetization, creative disagreements, changes in leadership, technological limitations, failed business strategy - the list could go on. Perhaps the strongest release in 343's lineup is the Master Chief Collection, the all-in-one Halo bundle featuring every title from Combat Evolved to Reach.

Halo: MCC is unique in that it allows players to select any Halo game's campaign, multiplayer, or custom games to play with friends all within one convenient package. But what makes it even more interesting is the Halo anniversary remakes/remasters that 343 has added to the MCC. Starting with Combat Evolved: Anniversary, and then going to Halo 2, these remasters provided the opportunity to return to these classic Halo games with fresh new graphics, cutscenes, and sound effects without compromising the classic feel that players love. After each anniversary title improved upon the last, the excitement for a Halo 3 Anniversary grew, but it never came. If 343 is to win over Halo fans now, a Halo 3 remake would be an ideal choice.

Halo 3 was originally released on September 25, 2007, so fans felt that a 2017 anniversary title was inevitable. However, the date has since come and gone without a new version of the beloved title. Currently, Halo 3 has been out for over fifteen years, and the love it receives from the fanbase has not wavered. A Halo 3 Anniversary style remake would still be a great way for old fans to come back to the game and the franchise as a whole while giving fans who never left a fresh way to experience the game they are so passionate about.

Why Classic Halo Is Needed Now More Than Ever

The Halo fanbase almost unanimously favors the classic style of the Bungie-era Halo games. Although there were some very interesting concepts, designs, and features in the modern Halo games, they mostly missed the mark that a lot of fans hoped for. Halo Infinite has certainly come a long way, with added features like the Halo 3 Refueled matchmaking playlist gaining popularity while proving the appeal of the classic game's maps on top of fresh graphics and gameplay. If a Halo 3 remake were to come out in the near future, it would be a surefire hit, especially if it kept the anniversary feature enabling players to switch to the old graphics with the press of a button.

Halo 3 also represents a time in gaming before live service platforms became so widespread. Fans who want to simply play a Halo game for the love of it gravitate to the original games as they come packed with content they can enjoy for years to come without needing to keep up with any changes. As recent remakes like Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space have proven, games of that era are as popular as ever and, when remade, can retain that same feeling while still becoming modern and fresh. Appealing to nostalgia through remakes is proven to win over fans when done right, and the Halo series could benefit from the trend.
