343 Industries recently incorporated the fan-made Call of Duty Zombies-like game mode Survive the Undead into Halo Infinite’s multiplayer combat workshop. The mode proved to be popular for players eager to get a taste of Call of Duty Zombies in Halo despite the game mode’s limited time in matchmaking. With the popularity of Survive the Undead, 343 Industries could build on it with the incorporation of many other Call of Duty game modes in Halo Infinite.

Many game modes between Halo and Call of Duty (COD) are inherently similar. For example, Slayer and Team Deathmatch are essentially equivalent to each other. Likewise, Halo Infinite’s Last Spartan Standing game mode is similar to COD’s Gun Game. The objective of both is to get kills to reach higher tiers and get new weapons without dying. Despite both games’ modes' similarity to each other, there are still several unique game modes found only in COD that could be brought into Infinite.

One of the more popular gametypes in COD’s near 21-year-long lifespan is Kill Confirmed. First introduced in 2011’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Kill Confirmed had players gain points by killing other players and picking up dog tags they dropped. Picking up these dog tags was the only way to get points in the match. Players could also prevent the enemy team from scoring points by picking up their fallen allies tags before the opposing team could. 343 Industries or some Forge community members could make a version of Kill Confirmed in Halo Infinite with the dog tags replaced with either players’ AI or custom-made drops similar to those seen in Survive the Undead.

Call of Duty PVE Modes in Halo Infinite

PVP COD gametypes aren’t the only ones that could be adapted into Halo Infinite. Some of COD’s most famous game modes are those against AI enemies, such as Special Ops. First introduced in 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Spec Ops is usually fast-paced, cooperative missions against AI enemies with various objectives. They’re essentially shorter but often more difficult campaign missions that players can complete with teammates. Sometimes, Spec Ops missions even continued storylines from the main COD campaigns, but only slightly so.

Halo Infinite’s Forge community has already been hard at work producing short, Spec Ops-like Halo missions of their own. Throughout Halo Infinite’s multiplayer custom game browser, players can find several community-made PVE missions with short story snippets in their descriptions. For example, community member Frostmear has created multiple PVE operations and raids, including Cascading Winter, Entombed Sanctum, and Foundry of Scoria. Each of these game modes and associative maps have players complete various objectives, such as capturing and defending points, activating mechanisms, acquiring unique hybrid weapons, and eliminating bosses, among others.

Call of Duty Extinction in Halo Infinite

Maps and game modes such as the ones created by Frostmear could be expanded upon to create a more official Spec Ops-like game mode or official playlist though the combat workshop. 343 Industries could request community members to add more puzzle-like challenges to the game mode. In this way, these community-made game modes would become more akin to the ancient cryptid wave defense mode Extinction seen in Call of Duty: Ghosts. Similar to COD Zombies, Extinction had up to four players seek out and destroy cryptid hives as they face increasingly difficult waves of enemies. Along the way, players often had to activate mechanisms or complete small puzzles to progress further through the map.

343 Industries had previously created a Call of Duty Special Ops-inspired game mode called Spartan Ops in Halo 4 .

Call of Duty’s Influence on Future Halo Infinite Modes

Call of Duty and Halo are some of the most popular multiplayer video games of all time, so it’s inevitable the two will influence each other in many ways. It’s unknown when or if the COD Zombies inspired Survive the Undead will return to Halo Infinite matchmaking, but it could set a trend for more community-made game modes to be tested through the combat workshop. 343 Industries has already added several community-made maps to official matchmaking playlists alongside community-improved game modes such as the recently added Juggernaut.

With these patterns and the success of Survive the Undead, 343 Industries may test more COD inspired game modes in the public combat workshop. Incorporating more community-made game modes could encourage players to continue building their own maps and designing their own games with the hopes that their creations may be played by thousands of Halo players one day. Whether these modes are community-made or not, they could add a bit more variety to Infinite's matchmaking and possibly attract Call of Duty players to try out Halo Infinite for the first time.
