Halo 4 is one of the most divisive Halo titles ever released. 343 Industries set out to revolutionize the genre by including loadouts, perks, sprint, and many changes to the franchise's weapon and enemy design.

Part of that set of overhauled ideas came in the form of multiplayer progression. Besides the new loadout system, players can also focus on obtaining unique cosmetics and perks in the form of Specializations. There are eight in total for players to earn, which can only be obtained once players reach rank 50. For those looking to obtain the best Specializations first, here are all eight of Halo 4's Specializations ranked from worst to best. This discussion will focus on the Tactical Package and Support Upgrade unlocks instead of Specialization cosmetics.

8 Stalker

Halo 4 Stalker Specialization

Stalkers are one of Halo 4's worst Specializations to invest in. Their unique Support Upgrade, Nemesis, causes any opponent that kills the player to be marked on their HUD for a few seconds whenever the player respawns.

The duration of this effect is incredibly short, which seems to last three to five seconds, and prevents players from taking other Support Upgrades such as Explosives. Those that want to stalk their prey would be better off obtaining Wetwork's Stealth Support Upgrade.

7 Engineer

Halo 4 Engineer Specialization

Achieving level ten with the Engineer will unlock the Drop Recon Support Upgrade for players to use. Drop Recon will mark Ordnance Drops 12 seconds before they appear on the map through the player's HUD.

While invaluable for newer players that don't want to memorize power weapon spawns, experienced Halo 4 players likely know the weapon spawns by heart. In this case, the Engineer perk is completely useless and not worth focusing on.

6 Tracker

Trackers are meant to uncover information by tracking their targets from long distances. In practice, the Tracker Specialization focuses on Ordnance Drops. This is due to their unique Tactical Package named Requisition.

Requisition allows the player to reroll the choices tied to a Personal Ordnance Drop whenever the player earns one. This can be useful when players obtain lackluster choices, yet this perk has two major downsides. The first is this perk can still roll the same items that the previous drop contained, which means players still have a chance of obtaining a bad drop.

Arguably worse is the fact Personal Ordnance Drops were disabled in most Halo 4 playlists due to major community backlash over the system. Players will rarely find enough instances where this perk can be applied, let alone be worth taking over another Tactical Package.

5 Wetwork

Wetwork Spartans focus on stealth by using armor that produces little noise while leaving no footprints to trace. Unlike Tracker, this Specialization's background translated to the game's sandbox rather well thanks to its unique Support Upgrade.

Named Stealth, this Support Upgrade will reduce the sound of the player's footsteps, make them less visible on Promethean Vision, and makes their assassination animations much faster. It might not be the best choice when compared to other Specialization choices, but those that love to stab enemies in the back might get some use out of Wetwork. Just note that Stealth doesn't remove footstep audio entirely; enemies can still hear Stealth users approach.

4 Pathfinder

Halo 4 Pathfinder Specialization

Players that love manning the weapon on Warthogs or enjoy using mounted weapons should focus on unlocking Pathfinder. This Specialization grants players the Gunner Support Upgrade when ranked up.

Gunner grants mounted weapons increased time before overheating and nearly removes the movement penalty tied to wielding a detached mounted weapon. The extra time before a weapon overheats is certainly noticeable on vehicles, which makes this perk perfect when combined with a driver using the Operator's Wheelman Tactical Package.

3 Rogue

Halo 4 Rogue Armor

Rogues grant the Stability Support Upgrade when upgraded, which causes weapons to flinch half as much when players are struck by enemy fire.

While the flinch resistance won't do much for close-quarters engagements, this upgrade is fantastic in Big Team Battle and similar game types on large-scale maps where DMRs and Battle Rifles reign king. Less flinch means more consistent headshots in duels. More headshots in duels mean more kills. Do not underestimate Stability.

2 Operator

Halo 4 Operator Armor

While the Pathfinder's Gunner Support Upgrade is worth obtaining, the Operator has an arguably better version. Operators gain access to the Wheelman Tactical Package when they reach level ten. This upgrade will cause commandeered vehicles to have increased health and decrease the duration of EMP effects to around a second.

Those that love to use Ghosts, the Mantis, or virtually any type of vehicle will want to obtain this perk as soon as possible. Since it's a Tactical Upgrade, it can also be used alongside the Gunner Support Upgrade to double-down on a vehicle-focused playstyle.

1 Pioneer

Halo 4 Pioneer Armor

Pioneers grant access to the Fast-Track Tactical Upgrade upon reaching level ten. When equipped, Fast-Track will increase all XP rewards by 20%. This stacks with other XP-increasing effects such as double XP boosters.

Since players can choose which Specialization to obtain first, focusing on Pioneer is the best choice. The sooner players can unlock this perk, the sooner they can earn 20% increased XP for future Specialization unlocks. Those that want to minimize the grind will want to obtain the Pioneer's Fast-Track Tactical Upgrade immediately.
