After missing out on last Halloween, the latest installment in one of the most beloved horror franchises of all time, Halloween Kills, with be hitting theaters in October. But with the release date right around the corner, the surprising announcement was made that the movie would also be debuting on the Peacock streaming platform on the same day.

The official Twitter page for the movie shared a clip from the upcoming horror flick while letting fans know that the sequel would be available to stream on Peacock as well as its original theatrical release plan. Halloween Kills was originally supposed to premiere in October 2020 but was pushback due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This marks the latest news surrounding the uncertainty of theatrical releases as the pandemic continues to hurt the movie-going industry. Though the overperforming success of Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi seemed to boost some confidence, other big titles continue to move such as Top Gun: Maverick and Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The debate also continues as to the success of the day-and-date release plan, as certain highly-anticipated movies, such as The Suicide Squad, underperformed.

Halloween Kills picks up after the events of 2018's Halloween, which was itself a direct sequel to the John Carpenter original of 1978. The sequel finds Michael Myers escaping from his near-death in the previous movie and continuing his rampage of terror through Haddonfield as Laurie Strode and her family seek to stop him. David Gordon Green returns as director and wrote the screenplay along with Danny McBride and Scott Teems. Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie along with Judy Greer and Andi Matichak reprising their roles. A second sequel entitled Halloween Ends is already scheduled to round out this new trilogy.

Fans of the iconic slasher franchise will no doubt be pleased to hear there will be a variety of options for how they can watch this bloody new chapter. This is also a very big deal for Peacock, marking their biggest movie release to date, and it could open the door for more high-profile Universal movies to premiere on the platform. Of course, a movie like Halloween Kills feels like it is meant to be shared with a large audience, especially at a time of the year when horror fans are looking for a good scare.

But with people still understandably nervous about gathering in a cinema these days, it's nice that the movie will at least be available for the Halloween season. And while some filmmakers are clearly not impressed with the day-and-date releases, like Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins, it seems clear that they will play a large role in the future of movies.

Halloween Kills will premiere in theaters and on Peacock on October 15, 2021.
