Half-Life is a hyperrealistic FPS developed by Valve Corporation. It was Valve’s debut game and the first title in the Half-Life series. Players take on the role of a physicist named Gordon Freeman, who is stuck at the Black Mesa Research Facility after an alien invasion. The game features different ‘Chapters’ which are all locked, except for the first one.

The introduction chapter, named ‘Black Mesa Inbound’, is where players start their journey in Half-Life. Unfortunately, Valve did not add a ‘Chapter select’ feature to the game, which would’ve made it easier for players to select which chapter they wish to start the game from. Players who don’t want to sit through the long train ride again can learn how to skip the intro using this guide.

How to Skip Introduction Chapter in Half-Life

introduction chapter half-life

Half-Life does not have any ‘levels’, instead the game is divided into multiple chapters. Chapters break down the story and gameplay into manageable chunks. The title of each chapter is briefly displayed on the screen as the player progresses through the game.

To skip the intro, players can follow the steps below:

  • Press the tilde (~) key to bring up the developer console.
  • In the grey dialogue box, type in the following command: map c1a0
  • Hit the enter key and wait for the chapter to load.

Players can use this little trick to skip the boring tram ride and jump right into the action-packed chapters.

This solution works for both Steam and non-Steam versions of the game.

The Half-Life storyline is divided into the following chapters.

  • Hazard Course (optional training)
  • Chapter 1: Black Mesa Inbound (introduction)
  • Chapter 2: Anomalous Materials
  • Chapter 3: Unforeseen Consequences
  • Chapter 4: Office Complex
  • Chapter 5: We’ve Got Hostiles
  • Chapter 6: Blast Pit
  • Chapter 7: Power Up
  • Chapter 8: On A Rail
  • Chapter 9: Apprehension
  • Chapter 10: Residue Processing
  • Chapter 11: Questionable Ethics
  • Chapter 12: Surface Tension
  • Chapter 13: Forget About Freeman
  • Chapter 14: Lamda Core
  • Chapter 15: Xen
  • Chapter 16: Gonarch’s Lair
  • Chapter 17: Interloper
  • Chapter 18: Nihilanth
  • Endgame

For the most part of the gameplay, players progress through the storyline completely alone, but they are occasionally assisted by non-player characters (NPCs), such as scientists and security guards who want to help Dr. Gordon Freeman on his mission to save humankind. Each area has its own specific NPCs, which can even be spawned on demand.
