One of the most interesting abilities players can test out in the Half-Life tutorial area is the long jump. Gordon Freeman runs fairly fast normally, but the long jump extends his forward movement considerably. On top of that, Half-Life has no shortage of jumping areas where a long jump would come in handy.

Unfortunately, the long jump is only available when players find a long jump module, and the 25th anniversary update hasn't made them easier to find. Players must wait until the single-player campaign of Half-Life is almost over before they can find this module.

Where to Find the Long Jump Module

Half Life Long Jump Use

Over the course of Half-Life, players must make their way across the Black Mesa compound to reach Lambda Lab. This is the lab where scientists first discovered and started visiting the dimension called Xen, and so they're the ones who know how to stop the alien invasion. Once in Lambda, players must navigate several puzzles and hazards to reach Lambda Core. The core is the area behind a locked door guarded by a scientist with a shotgun.

The scientist will explain Gordon's final mission into Xen, and once he finishes he'll unlock a door in the wall. This door is to the left of the rooms full of ammo and weapons. Behind the door is the long jump module, so be sure to grab it before continuing into Xen. While gravity is weaker in the alternate dimension, some of the puzzles involve tricky jumps that are impossible without the long jump module.

How to Perform a Long Jump

Half-Life is very picky about what has to happen to trigger a long jump. Players must perform the exact right inputs at the exact right moment:

  • Start by walking or running forward.
  • Press the crouch button.
  • Before Gordon completes the crouch and starts moving slowly, press the jump button.

Timing is everything. Once Gordon has fully crouched, pressing the jump button will have him perform a regular crouch jump. A long jump will only work if players trigger it during the crouching motion. Similarly, if Gordon is already jumping, pressing the crouch button will let him fit into small spaces but won't shoot him forward in a long jump.

Players can get the long jump module earlier in the game, but it involves cheating. Bring up the console (the ` button on PC), then type in "give item_longjump" without the quotes. The long jump can help players skip otherwise difficult sections, but it can also lead to falls into deep pits, so use it carefully.

Half-Life 25th Anniversary Update is available now on Linux, macOS, PC, and PS2.
