Highlights

  • Hecate's triple goddess aspect has not been shown in Hades 2's early promotion, but it could be revealed in the story.
  • Hecate is often depicted with three bodies or heads, symbolizing different stages of a woman's life.
  • The inclusion of Hecate's triple goddess forms in Hades 2 could add a unique and mysterious element to her character.

So far, one significant part of Hecate's mythology has not made an appearance in the promotional material for Hades 2. Since she has been built up as a significant character, fans should probably expect to see more of Hecate as Hades 2's release date comes closer. While there are still a lot of details yet to be revealed, some more information on Hecate could help to clear up a few details. She's probably going to be an important part of Hades 2's story regardless, but there is one piece of her mythology that may be worth addressing.

Hecate seems similar to Nyx from the first Hades, being a goddess who acts as an authority figure toward the protagonist. While Nyx was something like a surrogate mother to Zagreus, Hecate seems to be more like a teacher to Melinoë. Both goddesses help their respective heroes on the path to their adventure, and support them in their endeavors. It helps that they each have a mysterious air about them, adding to their otherworldly aura. Fans will have to wait to see any further similarities or differences between the two until more information on Hades 2 comes out, possibly during its early access period. However, one difference will surely present itself if Hecate's three heads appear.

Hades 2 Hasn't Shown Off One of Hecate's Most Distinct Features

Hecate is Often Seen as a Triple Goddess

One interesting aspect of the mythology behind Hades 2's Hecate is that she is often seen as a triple goddess. She is frequently depicted with either three separate bodies, or three heads (or masks) on a single body. In the latter case, she is frequently depicted with at least one animal head, such as a dog or snake. She has also been depicted in three forms that identify three different stages of a woman's life: a young woman, a mature woman, and an old woman. These triple depictions of Hecate have been common, yet so far Hades 2 has not shown her in that way.

In Roman Mythology, Hecate is also associated with the Goddesses of the Moon and Hunting, giving her several domains.

Hades 2's Early Materials Could Be Hiding Hecate's Forms

While nothing has been shown yet, the focus on Hecate in Hades 2 could lead to this aspect of her being revealed during the story. In the trailer, Hecate is shown wearing a veil and a large witch's hat, leaving her glowing eyes as the only part of her face shown. It's possible that she could have multiple faces that the player doesn't see in the trailer. Even if that isn't the case, Hecate's other forms could make appearances as well, either with her swapping between them, or treating them as entirely separate characters. It would give her character additional mystique in Hades 2.

A Triple Goddess Hecate Would Have Plenty of Potential in Hades 2

Hecate's three forms could be a reason for fans to feel optimistic about Hades 2 if they're included. In fact, her design could be hinting at such a reveal. Her outfit features a pair of metal shoulders shaped like masks over her robe, which could represent two of her three heads. While these could simply be a reference to her status as a triple goddess in mythology, it could also be a clue for those unfamiliar with that aspect of her. While the masks themselves may not be her heads, they're hard to miss, and players shouldn't be surprised to see Hecate's triple goddess aspects for this reason.

Hecate's triple goddess status is interesting, but it's not clear if it's something that fans can expect in Hades 2 as a part of her portrayal. It would give her a unique trait that isn't shared by any other characters, at least none that appeared in the first game. Plus, it could be worth seeing how the writers would handle this side of her, considering how well the first game's gods were characterized. Embracing Hecate's three aspects would be a great opportunity for Hades 2 to capitalize on.
