While the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is supposed to hit Disney Plus this December, there is some concern about whether it's going to be able to hit its release date. That's because so far, this special Guardians of the Galaxy production hasn't even started filming yet.

One of the reasons why the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is so highly anticipated is because creator James Gunn has made it clear that while this is a special presentation, it's canon. He even went so far as to say that people will need to watch it before they think about watching Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, there's now some real question as to whether or not they'll be able to watch it this year at all.

Collider reported that while Gunn was out promoting the release of his new Peacemaker series on HBO Max, he talked about the other imminent project he's working on. The director confirmed that the rising cases of the Omicron strain of the coronavirus across the country has made starting production on The Guardians of the GalaxyHoliday Special something that's a bit too dangerous right now. Gunn made it clear that there was one day when shooting was supposed to start but specifically the cases in Los Angeles were too high. That stopped whatever shooting was supposed to take place. On the other hand, he didn't seem too concerned that the shooting would be delayed that much longer. The famed director also made it clear that he's quite excited to start filming the holiday special, whenever that might be.

Speaking about his own excitement and the excitement of the general public about seeing the new project, he let it slip that he's actually a bit jealous. He said that people tend to freak out when they hear that there's a Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special in the works. He said that he wants to remind them that he has other big movies on the way, but they seem to care less about that.

While production on the latest installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise is at a bit of a pause, it doesn't appear as though Gunn is too worried that the show won't be able to be finished and ready by its December release date. It would also appear as though this announcement means that Guardians of the Galaxy 3's shooting is a bit behind schedule, as Gunn had previously said he's going to shoot both projects at the same time.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is currently set to premiere on Disney Plus in late 2022.
