James Gunn has never been shy about his love for comic books and pulp, none more so than with the project that he babied through his tenure working for Marvel (and even through a setback involving a campaign to boost him off the project). During his time away he created The Suicide Squad and the Peacemaker series, but his beloved Guardians of the Galaxy, returning for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 were never far from his heart. Now via his own Twitter account, Gunn has dropped the bass on the teaser trailer for the finale of his Guardians trilogy, giving audiences the first teaser to showcase what the Guardians (last seen kidnapping Kevin Bacon as a Christmas gift for Star-Lord) have been up to.Related: James Gunn Feels 'Comfortable' About Finishing The Guardians Of The Galaxy StoryThe trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 opens with a shot of the Guardians’ new ship, the Bowie (that recently debuted in the Christmas special), as it soars above an ocean. Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) narrates: “We were gone for quite a while,” as the ship descends into a suspiciously Earth-like neighborhood. As the Guardians—Star-Lord, Drax (Dave Bautista), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Groot (Vin Diesel), and Nebula (Karen Gillan), Star-Lord announces that they come in peace. The camera pans to a race of animal-headed aliens. A little Lemur-faced girl bounces her ball toward the Guardians and Drax whangs her with it dodgeball-style. Cut to Star-Lord: “C’mon, Drax! Seriously, dude?!?” before the crowd starts hurling rocks.

As the teaser cuts back to the Guardians aboard their ship, Mantis tells them not to forget where they came from. A montage detailing the character’s backstories starts, including seeing Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper) as a baby in a laboratory cage. The next shot shows the Guardians doing a space-walk in a rainbow-hued series of spacesuits, a shot of Gamora (Zoe Saldaña) looking at a Polaroid photo wistfully, and a scene of the Guardians walking through Nowhere, Star-Lord being carried by Nebula. Rocket cocks his gun and says to Star-Lord that he’s done running. The teaser shows a shot of Chukwudi Iwuji as the film’s villain, the High Evolutionary, Gamora pulling a knife, and the Guardians in what looks like another galactic prison as Gamora and Mantis carry a wounded Drax. The trailer shows the Guardians in their spacesuits crossing to the High Revolutionary’s lair.

It ends with another montage—shots of the Bowie crashing, of the citizens of Nowhere cheering, Rocket embracing Lylla, an Otter who is modified like he is, the Guardians confronting a huge space monster, Will Poulter as literal golden-boy Adam Warlock as he pummels Nebula, all as a wounded Rocket says that they’ll all fly away together one last time, into the forever and beautiful sky.

The teaser ends on a shot of Star-Lord and Groot, back to back, as Groot shouts: “We are Groot!” They fire on their enemies, Groot holding multiple blasters in a series of branches he’s extended from himself. The logo for the film comes up and there’s one last scene of Drax saying that they’re going to kill anyone who gets in their way to which Star-Lord replies that they’re not going to kiill anybody. Drax suggests killing a few people instead and Star-Lord still says no. Drax ends up suggesting they kill one stupid guy whom no one loves and Star-Lord tells him that now he’s just making it sad.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters May 5, 2023.
