Highlights

  • GTA 6's official reveal in early December is highly anticipated after over a decade since the last mainline entry, and fans should expect to be awestruck.
  • Rockstar's game reveal trailers typically showcase the iconic cities and world design of GTA, and the GTA 6 trailer is expected to primarily highlight the revamped Vice City or another destination.
  • Rockstar will have to carefully navigate the success of GTA Online and the potential transition to a multiplayer mode in GTA 6 while keeping details ambiguous to maintain player interest.

It is rare that a game's reveal trailer garners the level of hype typically reserved for its release, but over a decade since Grand Theft Auto's last mainline entry, GTA 6's unveiling has millions on bated breath as time winds down to its reveal date of early December. After years of scouring rumors, leaks, and other indirect sources of information on one of gaming's most celebrated franchises, GTA 6 is at long last getting its official reveal, and fans should know what to expect.

GTA 6's Leak Can't Spoil the Surprise

Rockstar's sterling track record as a studio paired with its opaque approach to showcasing games in development has created an unprecedented level of hype surrounding GTA 6. A massive database leak in September 2022 did some harm in dampening that sense of mystery. Luckily, the alpha build of the game unceremoniously shared with the world was more foundational than anything else, and may look unrecognizable in its final form ahead of the reveal trailer. While aspects of the game such as GTA's first female protagonist and a return to Vice City may have been spoiled, there is plenty left for Rockstar to leave its fans awe-struck in early December.

When it Comes to Trailers, Rockstar Has a Type

Driving Modded GTA5

It is a time-worn trope to consider a story's setting as another character in its cast, but Rockstar wears it supremely well. Liberty City, Vice City, and Los Santos are as iconic to GTA as any of its playable characters, each city imbued with irreverent charm, satirized parallels to the real world, and memorable landmarks. Rockstar is incredibly proud of its adept abilities in world design, evidenced by a pattern of its game reveal trailers mostly being showcases for those worlds.

  • GTA 4's March 2007 reveal trailer: time-lapse shots of Liberty City, punctuated by some introductory exposition from Niko Bellic
  • GTA 5's November 2011 reveal trailer: Michael De Santa monologs over tracking shots of life in motion in Los Santos
  • RDR 2's October 2016 reveal trailer: shots of nature and encroaching civilization on the American frontier, ending with foreboding advice from Arthur Morgan

One can expect the GTA 6 trailer to be primarily a highlight reel of vistas and destinations of the revamped Vice City or whatever other destination Rockstar has in mind. It may entail some cursory introduction to its protagonists and vague allusion to its story, but first and foremost, the trailer is likely to introduce the game's setting. If Rockstar intends to follow the initial trailer with a more in-depth showcase, that will be when GTA 6's main characters and the nature of their relationship will be divulged.

Rockstar Picked its Moment Carefully for GTA 6

Another wrinkle in GTA 6's reveal will be how Rockstar reckons with the runaway success of GTA Online. Support for the mode is ongoing, with untold hours and money players have invested since its inception, and phasing it out in favor of a successor will be a delicate matter. Almost no details are known about GTA 6's multiplayer, including if there will be any carryover from GTA Online, but it would be shrewd to keep those details ambiguous to prevent undermining what GTA Online content Rockstar still has in the pipeline.

The Next Era for Gaming

A specific date for the GTA 6 trailer has not been announced, though leading speculation places it on December 10, aligning with the 25-year anniversary of Rockstar's inception. If that is the case, a celebration of the franchise as a whole might go along with the trailer, possibly including a more detailed glimpse at the new title. Regardless of what Rockstar has in store, GTA 6's unveiling along with the Game Awards arriving in early December should illuminate what the landscape of gaming will look like over the next several years.
