  • GTA series has had multiple pop culture references, including The Matrix, adding to its memorable elements.

A GTA Online player has pointed out an Easter egg referencing The Matrix that was recently added to the game in the Bottom Dollar Bounties update. The find surprised many fans and adds one more layer of pop culture references that make up the DNA of Grand Theft Auto.

Grand Theft Auto would be popular just for its gameplay and basic stories, but it's also been filled with irreverent references and critiques of pop culture, politics, other media, and real-life happenings that help to make it memorable. This looks to be continuing, as Grand Theft Auto 6's trailer referenced viral moments, but the current GTA Online is no stranger to them, either.

Reddit user Bubbly_Yak6388 pointed out that GTA Online has just added a new The Matrix reference to the game. The game actually has several cars that are named after important characters from The Matrix movies. Cypher, Oracle, Rhinehart, Sentinel, Zion, and now the Niobe are all cars in the game, and share their names with important characters from The Matrix. As the series has added more cars, there have been more names adapted from the movies, and Niobe was added just over a week ago as of this writing.

Discovering GTA's Connection to The Matrix

Several fans in the comments didn't realize that there was a commonality between the cars in the game and a number of characters from The Matrix. One noted that they thought "Niobe" sounded familiar, but weren't able to place it until the post was shared. Another pointed out that while it wasn't included in the OP's list, "Neo" is also a car in the game. While the word Neo could certainly be used without referencing the movies, it's also the sole car manufactured by Vysser in the title, or in other words, the manufacturer's "The One," another moniker for Keanu Reeves' iconic character.

These aren't the only references the Grand Theft Auto series has had to the films. In GTA Online's Rockstar Editor, there's an option to apply a filter called "Morpheus." The filter is notably green, which was a color effect used on the original The Matrix movie. GTA: Vice City fans also previously discovered some interesting nods to the films.

With GTA Online still receiving updates, it will be interesting to see if any additional characters from The Matrix make it into the game as new cars. Eagle-eyed fans may even end up spotting further references in GTA 6 when it releases.
