Gaming online is a lot of fun for many, but it requires a fair amount of prep work. In addition to having a decent internet connection and console or PC, players often need to spend money to access online gaming, through services like PS Plus or Xbox Live Gold.

Those who don't typically pay for these services but are interested in checking out the PS5 version of Grand Theft Auto Online are in for a bit of luck. Players who set up their PS5s for GTA Online will receive a free week of PS Plus, providing they're not already subscribers.

Gamers who redeem GTA Online Standalone for PlayStation 5 will be able to unlock a seven day free trial of PS Plus from the game's launch on March 15 until May 14. During that time, players will be able to enjoy GTA Online and any other online PS5 games that require a PS Plus subscription to play for a week following signing up.

Players should take note that should they take this free trial, the service will automatically bill them at the end of the seven day trial unless they cancel their subscription. It works functionally the same way as signing up for free trials of other gaming and streaming services. Gamers who aren't sold on PS Plus or just want to try the trial should set up a reminder so they don't forget about the end date.

Following the reveal that GTA 5 and Online Enhanced and Expanded Edition was coming, some PlayStation 5 users were confused by terminology in the announcement. Initially, it seemed as though GTA Online's next-gen remaster would only be free for PS Plus subscribers, but that's not the case. Any PS5 owner can currently pick up standalone GTA Online for free, and should act fast, as the deal won't last forever.

Offering a seven day trial for PS Plus to those who download GTA Online is likely a winning deal for both Rockstar Games and Sony. Players who enjoy GTA Online enough to sign up for a PS Plus subscription long-term will help to pad Sony's coffers, while microtransactions in GTA Online can help to give the player a leg up.

Unfortunately, those who don't want to pay a monthly fee in order to access the refreshed GTA Online experience are out of luck, at least for now. The PC version of GTA Online lets players partake without any secondary subscription fee. However, there are currently no announcements as to when or if PC players can expect to see the next-gen enhancements come their way, so players who want the upgraded experience will have to resort to the Xbox Series X/S or PS5 for now.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and will be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on March 15.
