Highlights

  • Almost every Grand Theft Auto cover art features a helicopter in the top left corner, a consistent detail throughout most of the series.
  • The cover art for the first two games in the series differed significantly from later entries in terms of design and font.
  • Each Grand Theft Auto cover art prominently features characters, vehicles, and the Rockstar Games logo, with variations in the number of characters and additional elements like motorcycles.

A Grand Theft Auto fan has pointed out that almost all the series' cover art has a helicopter. Grand Theft Auto box art often has a similar aesthetic, with colored boxes including scenes that players can expect from each game, but some players may not have seen this key detail.

While the first two Grand Theft Auto games still found success, it wasn't until the games entered the 3D era that the launch day sales spiked. Beyond having lower sales figures than their 3D counterparts, the initial titles also had box art that differed significantly from the later era. The first installment had a view of a city with a fish eye lens on its box, while the second game had an aerial photo of cars held up in traffic. The font on the first two covers is also very different from the white text GTA fans are used to seeing. Ignoring these first two titles, almost every Grand Theft Auto box art has featured one key thing.

GTA 6 Fan Art Imagines Lucia in 9 Different Art Styles

A Grand Theft Auto 6 fan imagines the protagonist Lucia in 9 different established art styles and highlights her with different looks.

Reddit user Preattybeabi recently shared an image compiling the covers of a majority of Grand Theft Auto games. The image includes GTA 3, 4, 5, Liberty City Stories, San Andreas, Vice City, Vice City Stories, and the Episodes From Liberty City expansion for GTA 4. The Reddit user points out that there's a helicopter in the top left of each box, though the angle and design of each are different. The GTA 3 helicopter is seen from the side, the San Andreas one shines a spotlight, the GTA 4 one doesn't resemble a police helicopter, and the GTA 5 one offers more visibility in the front.

Although there are other aspects of the cover art shared between each game, the helicopter hasn't moved. GTA cover art also prominently features characters from the game, vehicles, and, of course, the Rockstar Games logo. GTA 3 notably has the most characters on its cover, while Vice City Stories has the least. Five of the eight games also include a motorcycle or motorbike in the top right corner, making it almost as common as the helicopter. Each title has colorful boxes segmenting different parts of the cover art, but Vice City Stories has the fewest, while GTA 3 and San Andreas have the most.

Because each GTA cover shares similarities with other titles in the series, the Grand Theft Auto 6 box art could continue the theme. If the helicopter isn't included or if it's moved to a different part of the box, it will end a long-standing trend established by Rockstar Games.

Grand Theft Auto

Grand Theft Auto is an action-adventure franchise originally created by David Jones and Mike Dailly from DMA Design in 1997. Following the release of Grand Theft Auto 3 in 2001, DMA Design was renamed Rockstar North and became part of that label for Take-Two Interactive. The franchise typically revolves around third person shooting and driving around open worlds that are inspired by real world locations like Miami, New York, and Los Angeles. With the release of Grand Theft Auto 5 in 2013, the series has quickly become the fifth best selling video game franchise of all time.
