  • There is speculation about when GTA 6 will be revealed, with the leaked gameplay footage suggesting that the game was well into development. As such, a reveal in late 2023 or early 2024 would make sense.
  • The release of GTA 6 could potentially be in late 2024 or early 2025, so an official reveal might not happen until next year, as Rockstar wants to ensure the game is ready. If the game is revealed this year, it likely will not happen at a big show like The Game Awards, as Rockstar usually avoids them.

2023 has already been one of the busiest and greatest years in gaming, with huge titles like Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Diablo 4, Starfield, and Hogwarts Legacy all releasing within just a few months of one another. But somehow, in the midst of all these highly-anticipated 2023 releases, many fans can't stop themselves from thinking about Grand Theft Auto 6.

Officially announced to be in active development back in February 2022, Grand Theft Auto 6 is undeniably one of the most highly-anticipated video games of all time, and the hype train hasn't even left the station yet. With GTA 5 and GTA Online still being some of the most successful and popular games around a decade after their initial release, the pressure is on for Rockstar to really make Grand Theft Auto 6 a cut above what came before it, and that's going to take the studio some time. But while GTA 6 may still be a ways off, that doesn't completely rule out an official reveal happening before the end of the year.

Aside from its initial announcement, no other official information has been given about Grand Theft Auto 6, meaning that any discussion surrounding its release date is pure speculation at this point. But there are a few factors that might hint towards GTA 6's release date, and in turn, suggest when fans might get to see an official reveal and trailer for the game. And one of the biggest factors is the monumental GTA 6 leak that surfaced in September of last year.

On September 18 2022, a huge Grand Theft Auto 6 leak hit the internet. This leak not only contained story and character details, but provided a few clips of raw gameplay footage, allegedly taken from a very early build of the game. While Rockstar has remained extremely tight-lipped on anything revealed in the leak, the state of the gameplay would suggest that the game was well into development at that point, but was still probably quite a ways off.

In the past, Rockstar has usually announced its games around a year before their initially slated release date, and two years before the game eventually releases after several delays. If that's the case again with Grand Theft Auto 6, then it's a real possibility that fans could see a GTA 6 reveal by the end of 2023. Very recently, Take-Two Interactive CEO, Strauss Zelnick, teased that 2025 would be the company's biggest financial year to date, seemingly hinting at the release of GTA 6 during that period, which runs from April 2024 to March 2025. It's very possible that GTA 6 is aiming for a late 2024, early 2025 release, and in that case an official reveal could definitely happen by the end of the year. However, Rockstar is likely painfully aware of how much is riding on GTA 6, and the studio will probably want to make sure that the game is all but ready by the time it's officially revealed, which could delay that announcement until some point next year.

But when it does come to finally revealing Grand Theft Auto 6, it's likely that Rockstar will drop the reveal fairly nonchalantly. Both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 - despite being huge releases with a great deal of hype behind them - were initially revealed via simple Twitter posts. It's rare for a Rockstar game to be revealed at a big gaming event like E3, so fans probably shouldn't expect to see GTA 6 at the Game Awards this year.
