Highlights

  • March 2025 is historically packed for game releases and GTA 6 might have a better chance in the summer or year-end.
  • Rockstar should choose a release window wisely to maximize sales and avoid competition with the rumored Switch 2 launch.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is already set to be one of the biggest releases of next year, and as anticipation becomes more palpable each day, there are many questions about when the game's official release date will finally be revealed. Despite the release year for GTA 6 being confirmed back in December, there is still no official date set in stone, but it looks like March 2025 is a window that Rockstar should avoid entirely.

There's no telling what time of year Rockstar will aim for in regard to GTA 6's release, and 2025 is going to be a colossal year for games in general. March of next year is already looking to be a packed month, and if GTA 6 wants to be the biggest hit of its release window, that particular month may be the least ideal time frame. If Rockstar is eyeing a March release, the developer could be going up against another juggernaut, thanks to Nintendo possibly shooting for a big launch during that month as well.

GTA 6 Should Avoid Going Up Against Nintendo

No matter what time frame GTA 6 releases, it's likely that sales will be through the roof. However, if Rockstar wants to maximize these sales, March 2025 might need to be completely off the table. March has historically been a stacked month for games in general, but recent rumors suggesting Nintendo is shooting for a March 2025 release for the long-awaited Switch 2 would make the month more crowded than ever.

March 2025 Would Present Massive Competition For GTA 6

Competition may be inevitable when it comes to game releases, but GTA 6 being put up against Nintendo and a brand-new console would be a huge hurdle for Rockstar to jump over. There are plenty of theories about GTA 6's release window, but nothing is official, and Rockstar is likely to keep a careful eye out on 2025's release calendar. Still, the studio could give into hubris and find a competition between it and Nintendo a fun challenge if Rockstar also deems March a likely candidate for stacked releases.

The Switch 2 Also Means More Titles To Compete With

Not only would GTA 6 be going up against the likes of a new console from Nintendo, but a new system also means new games, and Nintendo would be gearing up to release some launch titles in honor of the Switch 2 finally being a reality. As GTA 6 enters its final stage of development, the game feels closer than ever, but many gamers have also been waiting for the Switch 2 for a long time. Pitting two of the most anticipated releases against one another would be a nightmare for these companies when both ultimately want to maximize product sales. Therefore, if the Switch 2 does launch in March 2025, Rockstar would be smart to dodge it.

GTA 6's Best Release Window

It would be great for GTA 6 to be released early in 2025, but that seems unlikely at this point. GTA 6's launch is going to be one of the biggest of 2025, and releases of this caliber are usually saved for the summer or near the end of the year. This would be a safer window for GTA 6 anyway, and it's also the best way to close out the year with a bang if the game releases closer to 2026. As more reports about GTA 6 come to light, a clear release window will hopefully become more obvious and unburdened by tremendous competition.
