Superhero video games, much like superhero films, have taken on a genre all their own. They may fall under the wider umbrella of open-world or RPG titles, but few experiences can replicate the feeling of taking down criminals as Batman or swinging through New York City as Spider-Man. Many iconic comic heroes have been given some kind of gaming experience over the years, but few have had the opportunity to shine bright in a solo adventure. Green Lantern is one such hero, and as one of DC's biggest names, his lack of a modern AAA title grows more perplexing by the day.

The potential of a modern Green Lantern game isn't exactly a new conversation, but it's nonetheless one that's still worth having. Whether it's Hal Jordan, John Stewart, or Guy Gardner, Green Lantern's powers allow him to create light constructs of just about anything. This opens up all sorts of combat and traversal opportunities, but there's been no indication that any developer, publisher, or DC itself is interested in making a Green Lantern game a reality. If the day comes when the industry is ready to pursue a Green Lantern project, however, Sucker Punch would be the perfect developer given its portfolio of work.

Infamous Makes Sucker Punch The Ideal Green Lantern Developer

Sucker Punch is one of the industry's most seasoned development studios and has cemented that with the 2024 standout Ghost of Tsushima. Beforehand, the studio introduced a new take on superhero games with Infamous. A hallmark of the PS3 and early PS4 era, Infamous gave players a suite of superpowers to either stop crime or cause destruction with. Its gameplay was also paired with a morality system that added importance to every action, giving players the option to be a true hero or dabble in some villainous activities.

Infamous wasn't the only gritty superhero game of its time, but it was certainly one of the strongest in terms of creative gameplay and world-building. Sucker Punch thoroughly demonstrated how it can take an established genre and put a new spin on it, and that same innovation could support a Green Lantern project. Green Lantern's powers center around his ability to conjure up exactly what he needs at any time, from a giant brick wall to a fighter jet.

With how much gaming has advanced since the last Infamous and all the experience Sucker Punch has gained as a studio, it could nail the feeling of wielding a Lantern ring.

How Infamous Could Help Shape a Green Lantern Game

Infamous's morality system opens up an additional opportunity for Sucker Punch to leverage in a Green Lantern title. While most Lanterns exercise a strong will that allows them to wield the Green Lantern ring, others have let their willpower falter and take on less virtuous rings. A Green Lantern game developed by Sucker Punch could adopt a similar morality mechanic, and if players take on less heroic actions, they could instead use the power of fear found in the Yellow Lantern ring. It would compel players to think about their actions as a hero and be a creative way to integrate Green Lantern lore.

Sucker Punch has thoroughly established itself as one of the premier developers in the industry, and part of that reputation comes from its versatility. If the developer got another crack at making a superhero game, adapting the adventures of Green Lantern would be one of the best possible outcomes. With today's tech at its disposal, Sucker Punch could make a game that eclipses Infamous in almost every possible way, especially when it comes to visualizing Green Lantern's constructs. It's hard to say if a Green Lantern game will ever come, but Sucker Punch should surely be at the top of the list for developers if it does.
