Even before the trend of survival games, there's been a longstanding fascination in books, movies, and TV shows about people single-handedly surviving in the wilderness. Green Hell, developed by Creepy Jar, is one of the latest games to let players go through that experience themselves.
As the title suggests, Green Hell isn't interested in coddling the player, and they'll have to stay on their toes to survive. Like most survival games, players need to keep up their water intake, but Green Hell's players need to worry about waterborne bacteria and parasites. Players won't last long if they drink straight from the river.
This sounds daunting, but there are some convenient early game solutions to keep hydrated. By endgame, Green Hell's players will practically have water on tap.
Getting Water in Green Hell's Early Game
The keys to getting water early in Green Hell are coconuts. They're a naturally respawning source of clean water. It does take some work to extract it, however.
Green Hell's coconuts don't initially look brown and hairy. Just like in real life, they'll initially appear green while hanging in palm trees. After they pick them, players need Green Hell's stone axe or axe to cut away at the outer layer and reach the brown core. From there, they can drink the coconut water, worth 15 points of hydration.
The coconut's use doesn't end there. After they've emptied it, they can take the axe to hit again to harvest edible coconut flesh and two coconut halves. Using the halves as is, or combining them with a rope to make a makeshift water bottle called a bidon, players can collect water from rivers and other wild sources. From there, if they put the water-filled coconuts on an active fire, it will boil them, making them safe to drink.
Getting Water in Green Hell's Late Game
Of course, as lifesaving as the coconut method is, it is somewhat labor-intensive. Thankfully, it can be practically automated once the player knows more of Green Hell's crafting recipes.
The first option is to build a water collector, which will collect rainwater into a container over time. The recipe is as follows:
- 4 Long Sticks
- 4 Sticks
- 4 Ropes
- 11 Banana Leaves
The sticks and long sticks can be replaced by bamboo sticks and long bamboo sticks to create an identical bamboo collector.
The second option is to create a water filter, which will let players clean water without having to build a fire and wait for a boil. The recipe is as follows:
- 2 Long Sticks
- 1 Bamboo Log
- 2 Ropes
- 3 Charcoal
- 2 Stone
Like the water collector, the long sticks can be replaced by long bamboo sticks. The bamboo log, however, is still necessary for both recipes.
